Step inside any hotel in Hong Kong and you’re more likely to find paintings of flowers or landscapes than scantily clad Pan-Asian women in brightly coloured ‘superhero’ masks. But then, J Plus isn’t your average hotel – and Fin DAC isn’t your average artist.
Hailing from Cork, Ireland, the self-taught artist is perhaps best known in these parts for his vibrant mural covering one side of the Lovers & Friends store in Gough Street, or his giant mural, Senaka, which lies hidden on a mystery rooftop deep in Hong Kong’s wilderness. But now it seems the artist is making a name for himself in the hotel world, and we no longer have to scramble through the bushes to appreciate his work.
Opening tonight, a new pop-up exhibition, The Nadeshiko, will showcase a culmination of three years of Fin DAC’s life at J Plus Hotel by YOO in Causeway Bay. Featuring ten of his most iconic street art pieces, which can be seen on walls, boats, and rooftops on four continents of the world, the show aims to bring a little mystery to the city’s hotel scene while giving art lovers and guests a little treat in their home-away-from-home.
Hanging on the walls of the hotel’s dedicated art space, Art@JPlus, are visions of ordinary women depicted as superheroes, each adorned in beautiful accessories and wearing a mask that conceals a hidden story we will never know. Why the artist includes these masks is information that, he tells us, he will take to his grave because after all, what they mean to his audience is far more interesting.[masterslider id=”161″]
It might seem a little unusual to find ‘street’ art in the comfort of a 4-star hotel, but then J Plus is built on its passion for eye-catching and dynamic street art, which are incorporated into every part of the hotel’s design. Its series of pop-up exhibitions, which it launched in collaboration with The Cat Street Gallery last year, also garnered the hotel a strong following with art lovers throughout the city.
It now hopes to build on this success and celebrate urban contemporary art by teaming up with the man behind the masked beauties. “We are excited to be showcasing Fin DAC’s exhibition and celebrating vibrant art which not only complements our style and aesthetics, but also tell a similar story to our own,” Ms Vivian Chau, General Manager of J Plus Hotel by YOO, tells Localiiz.
“Each character that Fin DAC creates has a secret story, paralleling our own secluded identity, reflected in our discreet location tucked away in one of the most energetic districts of Hong Kong. We particularly love how the characters within the series meld with the style of our ‘street art’ design vibe – a key component of our brand positioning.”
