Popcorn and Opinions - July 02

By Localiiz 2 July 2015
The biggest film of the year (so far) must be upon us because the cinemas are putting up just one new film to challenge it at the box office. Has Arnie made the mother of all comebacks or is it hasta la vista time for the franchise? Our in-house movie expert, Howard Elias, is here to tell us about Terminator: Genisys and its unlikely competitor.

Terminator: Genisys

The 67-year-old Austrian Oak reprises his role as the cyborg that won't say "die" (but he will say "I'll be back") in the fifth and newest installment to the Terminator franchise that began way back in 1984. This time around, John Connor (Jason Clarke, Zero Dark Thirty) sends his trusted lieutenant Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney, the Divergent series) back through time to save his mother's life and ensure his own existence. But what Reese finds on the other side is not at all what he expected. My four word review? Meh. It lacks tension. Showing everywhere in either 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D depending on the cinema.

Blue Spring Ride

One of the big reasons why I dislike contemporary Japanese cinema is because so many of the films star 20-something year-old actors playing cutesy, pouty high schoolers in uniform. Blue Spring Rideis no different in that regard except this film is based on one of Japan's most popular shōjo manga(girls' comics). Here's how this one goes: Futaba and Kou both liked each other in junior high school but Kou moved away before they could tell each other. Now they're going to the same high school, and Kou has a new surname and a new attitude. Will they find their way back to love? Pass the Kleenex. Showing at the Broadway, Grand, MCL and UA cinemas.
