3 Reasons Why You Should Add Ballet to Your Workout Routine

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or simply a fitness enthusiast, injury prevention and rehabilitation is always a top concern. Developed by Venezuelan-born professional ballet dancer and teacher Victoria Vargas, the 5th Position method is a new and highly effective form of dance medicine that aims to help people of all fitness levels heal, strengthen and rebuild. 1. Professional coaches

Victoria Vargas is a ballet master and choreographer formerly of the Joffrey Ballet Company in Chicago. She first developed the 5th Position method after a motor accident left her with a lasting and painful recovery journey. Additionally, Ms. Vargas’ work as a teacher led her to founding UNO and the Luna Negra Dance Theatre, which earned her accolades from the City of Chicago in the expansion of outreach programs for minority communities.

Though originally developed as a discipline that investigates the causes and rehabilitation of dance injuries, as well as explore the anatomical mechanics of dance, the 5th Position is a truly functional and empowering workout for everyone. Since moving to Hong Kong, Victoria has been refining her innovative method in collaboration with leading osteopath Philip Clarke at The Clarke Clinic. Classes are also taught by Lucas Segovia, a renowned principal dancer on Broadway and The Joffrey Ballet. 


2. Training for all fitness levels

Crafted from the framework of classical ballet positioning, the 5th Position Fundamental class is a 60-minute workout focused on full body strengthening, stamina-building, and posture refining. Challenges are built through the use of barre exercises, Thera Bands, rollers, weights and other props.

The 5th Position method progresses through four levels of training. Firstly, Body Awareness is an introductory level focussing on basic exercises and techniques that will gradually improve your balance, strength, flexibility and endurance. Secondly, Elevation takes you to the next level by using a combination of ballet and Pilates to improve flexibility and strength. Thirdly, Balance deepens muscular awareness and pushes the envelope further with more core exercises. Last but not least is the aptly named Advanced, an intense level that integrates training from the previous three levels and maximises muscle fibre development using muscle-elongating techniques and strengthening sequences to help you reach your full potential.


3. Flexible schedule for all ages

As the home of the 5th Position method, ViVa International Studio is perfectly positioned to offer focused classes, as well as trainings in Floor Barre and other classical and contemporary ballet. Classes for adults run Monday, Thursday and Saturday, while youngsters can choose to join the 5th Position Summer Intensive program. The program offers a series of daily dance classes over two weeks under the direction of Victoria Vargas herself and Lucas Segovia.
