Though its appeal may remain enigmatic to foreigners abroad, luncheon meat plays an incredibly nostalgic role in the childhood food memories of Hongkongers. Who can say that they haven’t at least once craved a belly-warming bowl of instant noodles with a few stalks of choy sum and luncheon meat for breakfast from a local cha chaan teng? What about fixing up a quick-and-easy meal of fried luncheon meat with a runny egg and a splash of soy sauce over a freshly cooked bowl of rice in the wee hours of the night? (Not to mention Spam musubis...)

If the health risks and environmental concerns have kept you back from enjoying this tasty, tasty meat, have no fear—Green Monday has just announced that their food tech R&D company, OmniFoods, is releasing a vegan, plant-based version of luncheon meat called OmniPork Luncheon!

Made from soybeans, wheat, coconut oil, and beetroot, OmniPork Luncheon is aimed towards adding another variety of alternative meat to plant-based diets. Rich in protein, dietary fibre, potassium, and calcium, OmniPork Luncheon’s calories and total fat content are 40 percent and 49 percent lower than traditional canned pork luncheon meat, and its sodium content is 62 percent lower. Needless to say, OmniPork Luncheon is also cruelty-free and non-GMO, and it contains no added hormones, antibiotics, and MSG. More importantly, OmniPork Luncheon does not contain any carcinogenic nitrates.

And that’s not all you can expect: Another product that OmniFoods is launching alongside its plant-based luncheon meat is OmniPork Strip, an alternative pork product that is designed to be perfectly versatile. Using sunflower oil as one of its core ingredients, OmniPork Strip can lower lipids and cholesterol while offering a high protein count. Who’s excited to try making Spam sandwiches at home with OmniPork Luncheon? With a cooking method that is designed to be convenient, you can easily prepare it at home—simply fry both sides of the OmniPork Luncheon for one to two minutes and serve.

If you would like to have a taste of how the pros do it before trying it out in your own kitchen, Omni Luncheon & Eggless Sandwich, Omni K-Ramen, and Omni Zha Jiang are available exclusively at Green Monday’s Kind Kitchen from 19 May onwards.
