9 best mocktails in town to get you through Dry January

By Ching Yuen 8 January 2020

Dry January is one of the many popular New Year’s resolutions that people set for themselves to start off the new year fresh and ready to go. To help you pull through the month, we’ve rounded up our selection for the best mocktails in town. For anyone who doesn’t drink alcohol, can’t drink alcohol, or doesn’t want to drink alcohol, you can still have fun together

Please Don’t Tell

A bar within a bar, Please Don’t Tell (PDT Hong Kong) is hidden within MO Bar inside The Landmark Mandarin Oriental and is a staple within the Hong Kong bar scene. For our favourite mocktail, we are tied between Tuffnut’s Tonic ($108) that uses Seedlip Garden 108, lime juice, dragon eye, cucumber, shiso, and East Imperial Burma Tonic Water, and Silver Fox ($108), made with Seedlip Spice 94, ginger, lemon, passion fruit, and egg white. Seedlip may possibly be the most popular spirit-free alcohol in the market now, and also one of the first “spirits” to popularise the concept of non-alcoholic cocktails, so we appreciate the use of it anywhere!

Please Don’t Tell, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, 15 Queen’s Road Central, Central | (+852) 2132 0100

Whooo's Chai at VEA Lounge

VEA

At VEA Lounge, they actively root for non-alcoholic cocktails to become a part of more beverage programs and move away from the somewhat negative term of “mocktail” since the drink can be as complex as any alcoholic drink. With four spirit free cocktails to choose from, our go-to is Whooo’s Chai ($110), a mixture of strawberry, mango, clove, concentrated red grape juice, and lemon, best described as tropical but herby and smokey. The drink is served in a copper owl encased with a glass dome filled with cinnamon smoke so it’s also a drink for the cameras!

Bartender making a mocktail at Buenos Aires Polo Club

Buenos Aires Polo Club

We all know Buenos Aires Polo Club for their steaks and meats, but did you know that they also have a menu for teetotallers? Recoleta ($98), made with citruses, mate, and ginger ale, is always a good accompaniment to the cuts of meat you will be enjoying for the main course. The citrus will help you cut through the slight bit of greasiness from steaks, and trust that it will look great in photos too!

Vibes in Tsim Sha Tsui

Vibes

Tucked away inside Mira Hotel, Vibes is the place to chill out for the evening on their cabanas in a mini decorated forest and escape from the hustle and bustle of Tsim Sha Tsui. Next to their extensive cocktail and shisha menu, there’s also a selection for mocktails all priced at $108 each. For the more adventurous drinkers, there’s the Secret Garden made with green apple puree, cucumber syrup, lemon, pineapple, and apple juice. If you’re looking for something more toned down there’s always Mango and Passion, a mix of mango, passion fruit, and mint.

Drink on the balcony

Dispensary

Tai Kwun has no shortage of bars and restaurants, but this time we would like to put the focus on The Dispensary, the bar inside Statement that overlooks the courtyard. The restaurant is known for its sense of aesthetics and the bar does not disappoint! The non-alcoholic options they have includes our favourite Not Guilty ($98), a refreshing lemon tea high ball infused with lemongrass, syrup, lime juice, and lychee. A perfect spirit-free happy hour drink when you’re off duty!

Jalan's interior bar table

Jalan

Jalan’s non-alcoholic cocktails are more than just your average fruit juice or sodas. The booze-free options have been made with love and care, such as the ever-lovely Granny’s Panties ($60) which is made with lavender syrup, orange, cranberry, blueberry, and rosemary. If you are looking for something else, there’s also the Bungaraya ($90) which is made with Seedlip Citrus, hibiscus and rhubarb cordial, and rose tonic water. Make sure to grab a seat either at the bar counter or by the windows to soak in the Jalan vibes thoroughly!

Mocktails at Le Garçon Saigon

Le Garçon Saigon

Le Garçon Saigon in Wan Chai serves quality Vietnamese food if you’re willing to walk up the mini slope they’re on! Their non-alcoholic menu is adequately named Les Innocents, with classics such as Young Coconuts and Salted Lemonades. The best for us, however, is the Memoires De Saigon ($98), which is a concoction of Vietnamese lotus tea, apple, strawberry, and mint. It cleanses your palette and readies you for the many dishes just waiting for you to order!

Buzz Concepts

Buzz Concepts has curated a mocktail programme available only at their two outlets, Mudita and Paper Street, that offers a curated list of mocktails crafted with Seedlip, the 'world's first distilled, sugar and additive-free non-alcoholic spirit’. The menu is the same across the two different outlets but with different names to keep things exciting. Their highlight is definitely Mudita's Passion ($70) or otherwise known at Paper Passion, made with Seedlip Spice 94, passion fruit syrup, rosemary muddle ginger ale and rosemary garnish.

Mocktail selection from Lee Lo Mei

Lee Lo Mei

Lee Lo Mei has one of the best menus in town in terms of the name of their drinks and dishes, especially if you can read Chinese, that’s an extra layer of fun! Their dedicated mocktail menu features our favourite, the Yuzu Mule ($78), made with just about everything we like: apple juice, yuzu, ginger beer, lychee puree, and lemon juice. If one isn’t enough, there are four other mocktails to choose from as well in the form of reinterpreted classic nostalgic drinks, such as the Black Cow ($58) and Fresh Milk with Cream Soda ($58).

Non-alcoholic tiki shakes at Honi Honi include the Designated Driver ($80), made with orange juice, vanilla syrup, cream soda, soda water, passion fruit, and lemon juice and the Melon Shack ($80) which is watermelon juice, Falernum syrup, strawberry, and bergamot puree. If your friends decide to go wild at Honi Honi, you will definitely end up as the designated driver!
