There’s nothing as knee-weakening as an ooey-gooey cinnamon bun, fresh out the oven, first thing in the morning—or any time, really! To celebrate this decadent invention, we’ve tracked down some bakeries and cafés around town so you can sample the very best cinnamon buns in Hong Kong.

Bakehouse

This popular bakery in Wan Chai is known for its pastries, tarts, and sourdough loaves. Unlike the other spots on this list, this place has a sizeable dine-in section for weekend brunch lovers and pastry connoisseurs who want to take advantage of the fresh bread and pastries that Bakehouse churns out throughout the day. Bakehouse’s 8 am opening time makes it a great breakfast pit-stop to pick up one of their Ceylon cinnamon and pecan rolls ($30) on your way into work—if you’re lucky, as they get sold out pretty fast.

Café Sai

Tucked away in the depths of Admiralty Centre, this little deli shop might not look like it has much to offer, but they specialise in made-to-order sandwiches and coffees, and you can even score a sticky cinnamon bun ($22) for a bargain! From pizzas and hot dogs to hot lamb sandwiches and Philly cheesesteaks, this tiny grab-and-go deli reminds us of a food vendor you might find in New York—and all at a very affordable price. We recommend getting the cinnamon bun heated up, and one of their speciality coffees to wash it down.

Cinnabon

What is a cinnamon bun without Cinnabon? Dessert lovers rejoiced early last year when the OG (which, in this case, stands for “ooey-gooey”) cinnamon bun chain, Cinnabon, opened its doors in Hong Kong, offering a variety of their criminally indulgent sticky cinnamon buns. If their regular-sized Cinnabon (starting from $38) seems too much to tackle, opt for a pack of Minibon (starting from $108) instead, which you can mix and match across flavours like classic (slathered in their infamous icing), Chocobon, and caramel Pecanbon.

If you’re afraid you can’t finish these bad boys off, do not fear: Cinnabon can be stored in the freezer for up to 30 days, according to the shop. Simply heat them up for 40 seconds in the microwave or at a piping hot 180 degrees Celsius in the oven for a treat. And if Olympian City is too out of the way for you, the chain has just partnered with Deliveroo to offer door-to-door deliveries from Mong Kok—who’s ready to stock up?

Squarestreet Kaffe

A cosy Swedish coffee shop that doubles up as an exhibition space for local artists and retailers. Sitting on a quiet street near Man Mo Temple just off of Hollywood Road, Squarestreet Kaffe creates the perfect environment for a chilled afternoon. Peruse the shop’s chic Scandinavian wares whilst you sip on one of their coffees (made from beans roasted weekly in Sweden).

Courtesy of a Hong Kong-based Swedish baker, their Swedish cinnamon bun ($40) is absolutely scrumptious. This Scandi variation of the cinnamon bun, although not gooey or sticky, is delectably moist, with little crunchy sugar crystals scattered on top, making for the perfect snack to your fika (that’s a coffee and cake break in Swedish, to you and me). Squarestreet Kaffe is also available on Foodpanda for delivery.

Miam Bakery

We’ll let you in on a little secret: This quaint bakery in Sai Ying Pun produces freshly baked bread, delicate pastries, and soft bagels, and comes highly recommended for their cinnamon buns ($30) in all of their brown sugar and cinnamon-y goodness! Although their small shopfront doesn’t allow for dine-in, you can swing by to pick up their baked treats (there is always something fresh out of the oven) and a beverage to go with it.

If you’re a dog owner, be sure to grab a dog cookie for your four-legged friend, too, and take a slice of their banana bread or matcha pound cake to go for afters! Miam Bakery is also available on Uber Eats for delivery.

Proof

Last—but definitely not least—Proof in Happy Valley is an artisanal bakery that’s baking up a storm! Offering up speciality pastries, such as carrot cake croissants ($28), mushroom croissant ($36), and the mother of all cinnamon buns ($28) with a generous glaze of salted caramel, you can find the daily specials on their blackboard for the freshly baked goods on offer.

Proof offers delivery for a minimum order of $150, plus a $40 delivery fee. In-store, you can treat yourself to a coffee, with beans specially roasted in Hong Kong, to top off this delightful treat, but don’t just take our word for it. The proof is in the pudding—try it for yourself.
