Le Fromage by Ma

Vegans and lactose intolerant souls rejoice! Hong Kong’s first stand-alone vegan cheesemonger comes armed with pungent wheels, hunks, and blocks of artisanal cheese. Helmed by raw food maestro chef Tina Barrat, Le Fromage showcases 20 different kinds of handcrafted vegan cheese, ranging from smoked cheddar and pink peppercorn brie to truffle-flavoured shamembert and sans-goat cheese with Provence herbs. All of its cheeses are cashew and almond-based, fermented with the same types of bacteria used in traditional cheese-making to yield that characteristic funky tang we all know and love.

La Cremerie

One of our top picks goes to LQV Group’s cheesery, La Cremerie, where they sell only top-quality ewe, cow, and goat’s milk cheeses sourced directly from exclusive French farms. Best of all, they continue to age them in-house in Hong Kong.

We particularly like shopping at their Wan Chai branch because it is just across the street from their wine bar Le Quince Vinz, where you can sit down with your purchase for a quick cheese recharge and some quality wine to wash it all down. Whether you are new to gourmet cheeses or keen to try out new varietals, the cheese masters at La Cremerie are the perfect guides to help you out. You can even shop online and have your fragrant order delivered to your doorstep within 48 hours!

The Dutch

Step into a small slice of cheese heaven that is the Dutch and let yourself be transported all the way to Holland. Specialising in Dutch Gouda (well, duh), they have a range of flavours available, from pungent, aged goudas to young and smoked cheeses. The wheels of cheese that hang on their shop walls also include flavoured varieties, such as truffle, chilli, and pesto, making the cheeses more colourful (and eccentric) than ever!

Feather & Bone

When we mention Feather & Bone, most people would probably think of the extensive range of meats available at their modern butcher counter. In reality, this family-friendly establishment is also a great choice for shoppers if you’re looking for some quality imported cheese. Their range includes soft cheeses like Reblochon, Morbier, and brie, as well as feta, paneer, and halloumi. Classics like Gruyere, Manchego, and Grana Padano are also present. Something that stands out in Feather & Bone’s selection is their three-tier mini cheese tower, stacking wheels of Langre, Crottin, and Camembert on top of each other—the perfect birthday cake for any hardcore cheese lover!

Monsieur Chatté

Offering quality cheeses selected from outstanding boutique producers, Monsieur Chatté is the place to go to satisfy your French cheese cravings. Not only do they have an extensive collection of cheeses, but they also offer platters, cheese wheel towers, as well as picnic hampers for you to have your dash of cheese anywhere and anytime. Keep your eyes peeled for discounted cheese on the shelves that are close to the sell-by date.

Mercato by Giando

Mercato by Giando offers cheese selections sourced and imported directly from small family farms and producers in Italy and beyond. This covers most of the Italian cheeses you can think of, from fresh burrata and regional Parmigiano Reggiano to creamy ricotta and so much more. Besides their brick-and-mortar stores in Wan Chai, Mid-Levels, Happy Valley, and Ap Lei Chau, you can also place orders online and have them delivered on the same day (if you order before 10 am).

Classified

Another spot to pick up cheeses is Classified, a European-style café serving artisanal food. In fact, Classified is quite serious about their cheese: they have a walk-in cheese room where you can pick your own selection from within a temperature-controlled environment.

If you’re too busy to stop by their physical stores, you can head online and create your own cheese box. With a choice of either three, five, or seven kinds of cheese, your box will be packaged up with crostini and quince paste. You can also add on baguettes and antipasto, along with a large selection of wines and Champagnes. Did someone say picnic time?

Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer outlets across Hong Kong actually have decent cheeses in their deli corner at wallet-friendly prices. While the selection is limited compared to other speciality stores, if you have a sudden craving for cheese and need a convenient fix, marching into any Marks & Spencer food store will be sure to satisfy your needs!

Gourmet supermarkets

Plenty of gourmet supermarkets have a range of cheeses that will fit your budget. Great Food Hall, City’Super, and Oliver’s are just a few options with a dedicated cheese counter, whether you are shopping for a special occasion or no occasion at all. Just approach the staff stationed at the counter and be sure to try out some samples while you’re at it.
