We often hear Causeway Bay hailed as the Mong Kok of Hong Kong Island, as this is a neighbourhood that is always heaving with throngs of shoppers. During lunch hour, it gets even more chaotic as nearby white-collar workers all emerge for their lunch break. Luckily, there is always good food to be had here at unbeatable prices; we’ve rounded up eight places in Causeway Bay where you can have a satisfying lunch for under $100.

Wing Kee Noodle

Who doesn’t love a good bowl of cart noodles? Satisfying and unabashedly local, this is the epitome of no-frills food. You first choose your noodle base from a choice of six (such as egg noodles, vermicelli, or hor fun), then toppings from a range of 26. A bowl of noodles with three toppings is only $42, while four toppings will cost $48. Our choice would be egg noodles with Fish Balls, Turnip, Spring Rolls, and Pork Neck. Fork out an additional $20 for a portion of crispy Deep-fried Fish Skin or vegetables.

Delicious Kitchen

Famed for their pork chop dishes, Delicious Kitchen is a restaurant that truly lives up to its name, serving up lip-smacking Shanghainese grub since 1977. They also do fantastically priced lunch sets; for just $62, you can choose from 20 different dishes that come with either different types of rice or vegetables. Our top choices are the Ribs on Veggie Rice, the Twice-cooked Pork on Veggie Rice, and the Stir-fried Aubergine with noodles. What an absolute steal.

Din Tai Fung

There’s no way we can leave out DTF’s only island-side branch! The star of the show here is of course the delectable xiaolongbao, otherwise known as soupy meat dumplings. We will always go for the original Steamed Pork Dumplings ($64), but vegetarians will love the Steamed Green Squash & Shrimp Dumplings ($67). Each portion consists of six XLBs, so if you’re still hungry, order one of their Veggie & Meat Buns or Mushroom Vegetarian Buns to round off your lunch.

Café Match Box

This cha chaan teng serves up classic Hong Kong-style comfort foods that you can’t really go wrong with. They’ve deliberately kept a rather antiquated look and feel to the place, so there are hints of the nostalgic Hong Kong of old, and also have a cute menu featuring illustrations of some of the food available.

A generous portion of Baked Spaghetti or Rice with Pork Chop & Pineapple ($66) will definitely sort you out for lunchtime. They also do an All-Day Breakfast ($63) which comes with steak, a fried egg, ham, buttered toast, tomato, baked beans, mash, and coffee or tea!

Shanghai Hong Kong Noodle Shop

Those with small appetites who find themselves always having to deal with leftovers will definitely appreciate the beauty of a good ci fan (粢飯). This common Shanghainese snack is made with glutinous rice wrapped around a piece of fried dough fritter, some pork floss, and a handful of pickled vegetables.

A portion of Sticky Rice Roll in Shanghai Style ($25) might seem small at first, but actually gets filling very quickly because of the glutinous rice. Eat it while it’s freshly made so the rice is still hot and soft, and the fritter inside is still crispy. Complete the Shanghainese experience with either Sweet Soybean Milk ($10) or Salty & in Brown Sauce Soybean Milk ($16).

Yee Shun Milk Company

While this traditional Chinese breakfast restaurant serves a delicious macaroni in soup, the bulk of their customers come for their milk-based Hong Kong-style desserts. Making a good silky milk pudding is a special skill, and one that Yee Shun has perfected.

We’d recommend going for the original Steamed Milk Pudding ($36) first, and then, if you want to branch out, the Steamed Milk Pudding with Ginger ($37) or the Steamed Milk Pudding with Red Bean ($40), all of which you can choose to have hot or cold. Who says you can’t have sweets for lunch?

Delicious Thai

Not to be confused with the eatery of the same English name located in Central, this friendly Thai restaurant is tucked away towards the quieter end of Causeway Bay, near the South China Athletic Association. There are very few days in which Thai food isn’t a good idea, and Delicious Thai also offers this for cheap, so what’s your excuse?

Apart from the Stir-fried Rice with Minced Pork, Herbs, and Egg ($60), we also like the Thai Style Curry with Egg Sauce & Rice ($60), where you get to choose a mains of either pork chops, grilled pork cheek, fish cakes, or shrimp cakes to go with it. They also have a rotating weekly menu, with two specials for each day of the week, so you’re bound to find something up your alley.

Warung Malang Club

For an international city, there are surprisingly not all that many authentic restaurants specific to Southeast Asian cuisine. Luckily, Warung Malang is out there to provide us with hearty Indonesian food that is also very easy on the wallet.

Those just dipping their toes into this as a new cuisine should try the Nasi Goreng Spesial ($55), a fried rice that is a good introduction to the flavours of Indonesia. If you want more traditional tastes, then also go for Nasi Pecel Lele ($55) which is deep-fried catfish served with rice and sambal chilli paste. Of course, they’ve also got everyone’s all-time favourite, Lontong Sate Ayam, which is chicken satay with rice cake.

Warung Malang Club, 2/F, Dragon Rise, 9–11 Pennington Street, Causeway Bay | (+852) 2915 7859
