Eco-friendly swimwear may sound like a niche product, but small independent brands are quickly working to plug the gap in the market. Although few reports seem to agree on one clear statistic and the numbers have a tendency to fluctuate, we can safely estimate that approximately 10–20 million tons of plastic find their way into our oceans on an annual basis, choking up our ecosystem and causing irreparable harm. With this in mind, several companies have taken it upon themselves to tackle the waste epidemic in the stylish way possible: transforming plastic into chic swimmies. Let’s dive into some of the best eco-friendly swimwear brands in Asia that are actively trying to disrupt the industry.
Just in Hong Kong, there is a small number of homegrown brands working hard to provide a sustainable, eco-friendly swimwear solution to alleviate our ever-growing waste problem.
Hong Kong-based brand Transcend
specialises in flattering bikini designs that shape your body without compromising on quality. The husband-and-wife team got their start in the sustainable movement when they began actively participating in environmental causes, opening their eyes to the damaging impact our lifestyles have on the planet. All of their suits are made using ECONYL, a luxurious fabric developed from post-consumer materials that is more resistant to chlorine, sunscreens, and oils than alternative and conventional options. This astounding Italian nylon yarn technology repurposes fishing nets and ocean waste, providing a sustainable solution that can be recycled endlessly. It also offers the highest possible UV protection at UPF 50+. A portion of every sale they make goes to Moonlight Foundation Nepal, which provides education for underprivileged kids.

Yoga instructor Audrey Sze was inspired to create a sustainable alternative to mainstream swimwear options when she learned about ECONYL and its incredible properties. Drawn to the fabric’s buttery-soft quality, its technical ability to retain shape, and body-sculpting features, Oliv Swim
was born in collaboration with an ethical and socially-responsible Balinese factory. Gathering inspiration from classic styles and simplistic silhouettes, Oliv Swim’s debut product ANNA is slated to launch this summer. Check back frequently for more updates!

Not to be left behind, Singapore goes head to head with Hong Kong on homegrown eco-friendly swimwear brands. An impressive count of three local companies are based out of the tiny city state.
Whether you are in search of more active styles, something revealing and leisurely, or even sporty leggings, August Society
stocks them all. Ethically produced in Bali using premium recycled fabrics and durable Lycra, August Society repurposes waste polyester and nylon, preventing them from reaching the ocean and landfills. Our favourite item in their latest collection is their reversible one-piece Valencia
, which features a solid colour on one side, and a bold pattern on the other—two suits for the comfortable price of one! What a steal. Plus, their products come in plant plastic pouches that biodegrade over time.

Swearing by socially-responsible practices to create a positive impact on the fashion industry, Singapore-based UBU
takes the lead as a conscious beachwear brand. For their swimwear, UBU utilises a luxury fabric called Carvico Vita that is made from ECONYL. With an in-house team completely dedicated to creating functional and fashionable designs, UBU presents flexible one-pieces or mix-and-match bikinis for limitless customisation possibilities. We just love the vibrant, be-ribboned Rhiannon
in firetruck red. They also give back to charities, championing the work done by BIG Against Breast Cancer and 4Ocean.
