Your Neighbourhood Guide to Tsim Sha Tsui to Sham Shui Po

By Jenny Leung 16 November 2018

While there's certainly lots to do on Hong Kong Island, it isn't the only part of town that's filled with vibrant city life. From Sham Shui Po all the way down to Tsim Sha Tsui, you will discover stunning architectures, mouth-watering street food, and everything in between. Not sure where to start? Then join us as we guide you through some of the best places to go, eat, drink, and shop around Kowloon.

Where to Go

Hollywood may have a Walk of Fame, but Hong Kong has an Avenue of Stars. While this has been closed for redevelopment for the last few years, it's well worth a look once it re-opens in early 2019. As for those looking for something closer to nature, we recommend checking out the Flower Market and Yuen Po Street Bird Garden in Prince Edward. (Read more about Hong Kong's best markets here.)

What to Do

Add a dose of culture to your day and visit one of Hong Kong's many museums. From the famous dome-shaped Hong Kong Space Museum to M+ Pavilion, the newest Modern Art Museum in West Kowloon, there's plenty to see. Also, don't miss the Symphony of Lights at 8pm, where you can enjoy front row seats to a dazzling light and laser show illuminating Hong Kong's magnificent skyline.

Where to Eat

A true, authentic experience in Hong Kong wouldn't be complete without some local street food. For some lovely steaming hot Cheung Fun, Hop Yik Tai in Sham Shui Po is a must-try, and if you're feeling up to the challenge, pick up a few offal skewers at the Fei Jei Snack Store in Mong Kok. Still not satisfied? Then make your way to Michelin approved restaurant Block 18 Doggie's Noodle, and tuck into a bowl of traditional "doggie's noodle" (pictured). Sounds weird we know, but we promise you won't regret it!

Where to Drink

Hong Kong is famous for its exciting nightlife, but if Lang Kwai Fong isn't your cup of tea, there are still plenty of options around Tsim Sha Tsui. For a breathtaking view of Victoria Harbour, visit Aqua, Ozone, or the Eyebar. Better yet, head over to Knutsford Terrace where you will be greeted by a seemingly endless row of bars that are guaranteed to satisfy all your drinking needs. If you love jazz, swing by Ned Kelly's Last Stand on Ashley Road for some great live music, or head to a more intimate venue, Scarlett Cafe & Wine Bar, for some gorgeous wine and tapas.

Where to Shop

When it comes to shopping, you'll find everything from novelty "I Love HK" t-shirts, to sparkling jewellery at Mong Kok's Ladies Market and Fa Yuen Street Market. For great deals on the latest sports gear, head to nearby Sneaker Street, and if you're looking for atmosphere, Temple Street Night Market in Jordan cannot be matched. For those looking to snatch up some bargain tech and gadgets, the Golden Computer Centre and Ap Liu Street in Sham Shui Po have everything you need. Right next door to that, Ki Lung Street and Yu Chau Street are lined with stores selling fabrics, beads, feathers, and an endless supply of haberdashery items. A pure DIY haven.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in the UK, Jenny grew up with the best of both worlds. She loves just about anything to do with music and doesn’t shy away from belting out a tune or two when it comes to karaoke. If she’s not out and about exploring the city and practising her photography skills, she’s probably tucked up in bed with a book or glued to her laptop doing her online shopping.
