With the pandemic still looming, many of us have halted our travel plans for the foreseeable future, but that should not stop us from exploring! In fact, there are plenty of adventures to be had in our own backyard—you just need to know where to look. Luckily, Hong Kong experience platform Mylocals is introducing a whole new way to experience our beloved city—here are just some ideas to get you started if you’re into adrenaline-pumping activities!
If you are looking to cover as much ground as possible, there’s no better way to explore and take in the views than by bike. You can even go as far as Hong Kong’s northern frontier—right by the border! A large part of the route is flat and follows dedicated cycle paths, making it ideal for beginners and youngsters to tag along as you meander along the extensive wetlands near Shenzhen and soak in some of the fantastic vistas along the way.
Offered by Hidden Gems Travel, this is only one of many bike tours, of course, but you can find other routes of varying levels of difficulty depending on your level of fitness and sense of adventure, such as the cycling and hiking tour to Plover Cove or Mui Wo mountain bike experience with Wild Hong Kong (pictured above).
Ever wanted to join a group expedition with your dog? Or perhaps you’re missing the companionship of a furry friend? Well, look no further! Non-profit group Exploring Dogs organises monthly excursions for dog owners (and lovers) to explore Hong Kong’s beautiful countryside, all whilst raising money for local animal shelters.
It’s a social event for all involved and a great way to explore Hong Kong’s scenic spots. All you need to do is cover your fees for transportation—which is all arranged for you—and add a minimum donation of $50 per person.
If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, there is no better way to visit some of Hong Kong’s most serene spots than by water. Go paddling in Hoi Ha—a coastal inlet and marine park in Sai Kung known for its calm waters and biodiversity—or embark on a Geopark paddle, suitable for beginners and intermediate paddlers, to explore some of the untouched beaches and remote caves scattered throughout the Sai Kung coast.
Bet you didn’t know you could go zip-lining and canyoning in Hong Kong! Well, there ain’t no mountain high enough for the Hong Kong Mountains Guide Union, and this tour is definitely a unique way for the daredevils and adrenaline junkies out there to experience a lesser-known side of the city. Sign up to join any one of their exciting rock climbing, canyoning, caving, or zip-lining adventures around Hong Kong.
And the best part? Beginners are welcome! You don’t need to be an expert to take part in these experiences, as you are in the more-than-capable hands of Gordon and his team, who have integrated their international experiences and modified their skills to cater for Hong Kong’s geographic characteristics. Go rock climbing on the iconic Lion Rock or learn how to cliff jump properly whilst canyoning Ping Nam streams and waterfalls.
You don’t have to confine yourself to the ground—the sky is the limit, literally. You might not be able to fly in an aeroplane just yet, but there’s no quarantining required when you return from a flight around Hong Kong with licensed paragliding instructors! Experience the city from a bird’s-eye view through tandem paragliding with Hong Kong Hike ‘N’ Fly. The mix of fitness, adrenaline, and fun is an exhilarating way to see Hong Kong, and a great introduction to the paragliding world, with the only licensed and registered paragliding pilots and instructors in Hong Kong.
But that’s not all that Mylocals has to offer! With over 90 experiences and private tours available for booking on the platform, Mylocals offers experiences (which are workshops led by passionate individuals) and private tours (which are led by licensed tour guides or agencies). Once everything is confirmed, all you need to do is prepare for how much you will enjoy yourselves on your day out. Check out all the tours here and sign up for an adventure!
