The Final Countdown

By Sophie Pettit 15 December 2014
From the turkey to the truffles, and the cocktails to the punch, you ate, drank and partied like royalty this Christmas. But before you turn your thoughts to detoxing and hitting the gym, don't forget you have one last night to let loose and celebrate before the year is out. So join us in our New Year’s Eve countdown as we give you the lowdown on some exciting events lined up around the city, as well as ideas to help you kiss goodbye to 2014 and enter 2015 in style.

Go Out With a BANG

It happens every year but it never gets old. Nothing beats cheering in the New Year to a spectacular display of fireworks over our gorgeous city along side hundreds of thousands of fellow Hongkongers. Totally free and totally unforgettable, this eight-minute show is guaranteed to spark a party atmosphere as it lights up the skies above the iconic Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Make your wish upon a shooting star as they launch from the rooftops around Victoria Harbour from 11pm. Whether you watch the display from a boat on the harbour, along the waterfront, or up high in a skyscraper, arrive early to ensure you get a prime spot. Countdown starts 60 seconds before midnight but don’t leave it until the last minute to join the fun. And don’t forget, it’s probably a good idea to walk home afterwards, as trying to catch a taxi, or cramming yourself onto the MTR with half of Hong Kong can be quite a challenge.

Dance in the Street

Join the biggest party of the year at popular focal point Lan Kwai Fong. Be prepared to pay a heavy cover charge at most of the bars and venues, but don’t forget there is always the trusty 7-Eleven to ease the burden on your wallet as you enjoy a few cheeky cheap drinks in between your classier beverages. If you and your friends don’t mind crowds (which can be quite suffocating) and are looking to lap up the street vibes, then this is the perfect spot for you. You may wish to stop off at Boujis as they transform their four walls into a Snowy Wonderland filled with feathery masses of snowflakes, and music from DJ Blaze and DJ Miles Slater. Catch the early drink deals before midnight, or book your table for ten to celebrate the special night. Whatever you do, expect to pay more than usual for your cab ride home and be prepared for the uber long taxi queues. But don’t forget, there’s always the option to jump on the first MTR home from Central at 6.06am, if you go really wild and party on through the early hours.

Have a Fancy Feast

If you would prefer to see in the New Year in a more relaxed fashion, there are plenty of dinner deals dotted around the city to help you celebrate the night in style. From Eurpoean to Asian cuisine, there's a menu to satisfy any palate. Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen & Bar is resurrecting the best of British Rock at its Brilliantly British New Year's Eve Party featuring an international DJ. Or go Hispanic and celebrate the night with unlimited roaming carts of Spanish delights and free-flow cava and sangria at Boqueria on Wyndham Street. Meanwhile, Club Mama San's Asian themed New Year's Eve party, Party With Mama will take guests on a decadent journey of exquisite Asian cuisine to tunes from an international DJ. Take your celebrations to new heights and party on the Peak at Cafe Deco. The venue is hosting its traditional countdown party with the theme 'Decades Dance Party - Dine, Dance & Celebrate!' so you can live up to this name by dining, dancing and singing along to all the classic hits from the past few decades with a live band.

Party Like a Celebrity

Be a star for the night at the New Year's Eve Hollywood Red Carpet Party at the American style steakhouse BLT Steak and one of Hong Kong's iconic Italian restaurants, Al Moro, Ristorante Italiano. Join your A List guests and enjoy a grandstand view of the city's midnight fireworks from a glittering red carpet indoor and outdoor marquee on the waterfront at Harbour City. Fancy venturing a little further and taking your party to the the New Palace of Asia? Head to the glittering gold towers of The Galaxy Macau and see in the New Year in luxury at the 2015 Golden Glitz Countdown Party at East Square, which will bring together performances, great music, delicious dining and accommodation deals.

Cruise into The New Year

Splash out on one of the most spectacular ways to say hello to 2015, and climb onboard a luxury vessel or traditional Chinese junk with cocktails and canapes. Get right in the middle of all the action and watch the New Year's Eve fireworks display as you sail around Victoria Harbour with a glass of Champagne in hand. There are a whole host of companies waiting to take you out on the water, with a variety of food and drink packages to suit all budgets, from Hong Kong Junks and Jaspas Junks, to the more luxurious end of the scale with luxury yachts, junks and cruisers from Saffron Cruises, Hong Kong Yachting, Riviera Orientale and Breakaway. Don't miss out on the chance to party at sea! However you decide to celebrate this New Year's Eve, just remember, it's your time to shine, so get on out there and end the year in style!
