Did you know that every year, 10,000 new cases of diabetes are recorded in Hong Kong? If you are unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with this illness, or close to someone who is, then we have some good news for you.
Proven to work for nine out of ten people, the Reverse Diabetes2 Now programme encourages patients to actively work in groups to create a healthier lifestyle through more physical activities, nutrition, relaxation, and sleep!
What causes type 2 diabetes?
With an estimated 10% of Hong Kong people suffering from type 2 diabetes, Hanno Pijl, Professor of Diabetology at Leiden University from the Netherlands, sees this as a tragic development as a healthy lifestyle can prevent, or even reverse, the disease.
“The cause of type 2 diabetes is often a combination of too little exercise, bad diet, stress, and poor sleep. We spend too much time sitting and not enough exercising; it’s the price we pay for our modern lifestyle. Patients often end up in a downward spiral and require increasing amounts of medication and become preoccupied with their disease. They feel like they’ll never be cured, even though the disease can be reversed in many cases.”
Getting a grip on the disease
The Reverse Diabetes2 Now programme teaches you to get a grip on the disease. Reverse Diabetes2 Now is a five-day programme of which the first two days include an overnight stay. Working in groups consisting of 15 to 20 people, there will also be a support team of professionals consisting of a doctor, nurse, coordinator, coach, and a dietician at all times.
During the theoretical part of the programme, participants will learn everything about type 2 diabetes—how it affects your body, how you can reverse it, and how you can keep up the improvement. Practical skills will also be taught to help you manage the disease. Delicious, fresh meals are prepared and you receive several recipes with explanations on how to cook healthy meals. This new eating plan is not about counting calories or living off carrots, instead, you will learn to eat good, nutritious meals that will leave you feeling saturated, and ultimately, reducing the need for eating junk food and snacks.
After the first two days of the programme, there will be follow-up days provided after one month, then again after three months and six months. In the meantime, participants will have full access to a huge online community of others who also took part in the programme, a coach, and a dietician who can give you tips and advice whenever you need.
“We often see benefits very quickly: the participants sleep better, their waist circumference shrinks, and their blood values significantly improve. In consultation with the Medical team of the programme, most of the time it’s possible to make a start with reducing your medication.”
The programme is also effective in the long-term. Scientific research by the Louis Bolk Institute in The Netherlands shows that nine out of ten participants have managed to turn the tide months after starting the programme.
“We often hear from people that they feel they have been given their lives back. They sleep better, have more energy, and find it easy to keep up their new lifestyle. More than 1,500 people have already participated in the programme, and participants rate the programme with an 8.8 out of 10. Of all the participants, 30% are no longer using diabetes medication a year after the programme.”
The true strength of this programme is found in the professional support team in combination with the group dynamic. Ultimately, you have to make the change yourself—but you’re never alone.
