Pillow Talk – Unusual Art Exhibition Calls for Used Pillow Donations

By Stasia Fong 17 December 2013
The idea that there could be meaning behind our dreams is fairly common, but the suggestion that this could extend to the pillows we rest our heads on is yet to be explored – until now! According to one Filipino artist who plans to build a huge wall of used “dream buddies” right here in Hong Kong, there’s much more to pillows than thread count and feathers. Artist Ringo Bunoan says “pillows catch what leaks from our minds, via our mouths and eyes as we sleep. They are the sites of physical rest and rejuvenation, as well as cradles of our ideas, memories, nightmares and dreams.” Her upcoming piece ‘The Wall’ will see at least 200 used pillows turned into a 10-metre-long monument as part of the ‘POETICS OF MATERIALITY’ exhibition at the Osage Gallery Hong Kong. The sleepy display will run from January 4th to February 4th, but all pillows must be collected by December 20th. You can’t build a huge wall of pillows overnight you know! Bunoan believes that “each individual pillow serves as a personal archive of accumulation of sleep, or subconscious saliva; The Wall thus produced functions as a group portrait of all these interior substances.” Not creeped out? Want the remnants of your subconscious featured in this piece? Drop off your used pillows at Osage Hong Kong (4/F, Union Hing Yip Factory Building, Hing Yip Street, Kwun Tong between 10:30am and 7:00pm). If for some weird reason you have 10 or more pillows to donate, contact the gallery for a free pick up.

Hong Kong Art Exhibition to Bring Displacement Issues Home December 5th 2013: Concerns about land ownership are not new in Hong Kong. We were previously under British rule; we’re part of China but yet feel we don’t - or rather don’t want to - belong; we are rapidly running out of space for housing, leaving outlying villages under threat. Hong Kong is also home to a number of refugee groups, one of which has become the focus of an unusual art exhibition.
