Ocean Park Hong Kong has opened a new crocodile habitat! Croco Land is the latest addition to the oceanarium and marine amusement park’s various conservation habitats. It’s now home to Passion, a crocodile found in Yuen Long last year, who is the park’s newest crocodile ambassador.

Discovered in the Lin Fa Tei village, in the Yuen Long district of Pat Heung, Passion was first taken in by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department before its transfer to Ocean Park Hong Kong on 30 April 2023. Since then, Ocean Park Hong Kong’s animal experts have been working tirelessly to create a new habitat for the crocodile’s care and well-being.

In January 2024, Ocean Park Hong Kong encouraged the public to share their suggestions for the then-unnamed crocodile. Voting for the most suitable name then took place in February. In Cantonese, the crocodile is named 百香果 (baak3 hoeng1 gwo2; passion fruit) in reference to the word’s resemblance to Pat Heung (八鄉; baat3 hoeng1) where the crocodile was discovered. As for the English name, only the first word in “passion fruit” was kept.

With Croco Land now complete, Passion finally has a proper home. Located by Ocean Park Hong Kong’s main entrance, Croco Land is a replica of a crocodile’s natural habitat

It has land and water features, ample ground for Passion to walk on, and trees to offer shelter from the sun. A freshwater pool accompanies the man-made island and offers deep and shallow waters that are temperature-controlled.

A display detailing the story of Passion’s discovery and eventual settlement in Ocean Park Hong Kong is located by the habitat, along with fun facts about Passion, as well as conservation procedures undertaken by animal experts at Ocean Park Hong Kong.

To celebrate the arrival of Passion and the opening of Croco Land, Ocean Park Hong Kong is hosting an Animal Discovery Fest in time for Easter. Visitors are encouraged to come and learn more about the importance of animal and nature conservation. Get your tickets here.
