9 new cafés and coffee shops in Hong Kong to visit this November

Hong Kong is bursting with coffee shops, and new openings are appearing left and right. Holding its own against neighbouring rivals South Korea and Japan when it comes to coffee and cafés, our city definitely has its own eclectic roster to boast about. After all, who doesn’t need their daily dose of caffeine or thirst-quenching drink to start the day? Join us as we round up the latest cafés and coffee shops popping up in the city.

Soft Thunder Bakery

This popular Kennedy Town bakery has expanded to Wan Chai! Taking over a spacious and open location on Queen’s Road East, Soft Thunder is bringing its signature baked goods to this new store, alongside freshly brewed coffee and speciality drinks. Highlights include the Instagrammable unicorn puffs, which come in rotating seasonal flavours such as Earl Grey, strawberry, or pistachio; the signature pistachio croissant; the puff pastry cinnamon roll, and more. On the drinks menu, you will find your usual coffee orders, as well as an indulgent pistachio latte, and an irresistible mochi affogato.

On the Hill Coffee Bar

On the Hill Coffee Bar has just opened a new location in Tai Kwun! Tucked away within the walls of the old heritage site, the café repurposed the ground floor of the prison block and transformed the narrow corridors and grim cells into a quirky, avant-garde space to enjoy coffee.

Nana’s Green Tea

Newly opened at Airside is Japanese matcha specialist Nana’s Green Tea, bringing its popular delights to Hong Kong for the first time! Sporting an open interior, the store’s design draws inspiration from Japanese tea culture and tea ceremonies, and offers a wide selection of speciality drinks such as the matcha latte, black sesame latte, or matcha azuki shiratama mochi latte.

The café also serves Insta-worthy parfaits, with matcha and hojicha flavours available, among others. Other dessert options include Nana’s signature cheesecake, and Japanese desserts such as zenzai and warabimochi. On the savoury side, Nana’s Green Tea has a variety of salads, donburi, and udon sets—our personal favourites are the chicken soboro onsen egg don and the soymilk-based dandan udon.

Dor Dor Coffee

As a wellness-oriented café, Dor Dor Coffee offers a selection of health-conscious snacks and herbal coffee that incorporates Chinese medicinal herbs. Highlights include the aged tangerine peel coffee and the female ginseng coffee, both served in a traditional teacup. You can pair your coffee with a cup of cube-shaped handmade frozen yoghurt, with green bean, strawberry, and black sesame flavours available. If you are craving something savoury, a selection of skewers is available.

Gooca is a camping-inspired café sporting a laid-back environment, furnished with deck chairs, potted plants, and drapes hanging from the ceiling. Come with an open mind—Gooca offers a series of innovative food creations, which is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Highlights include the savoury spaghetti doughnuts—which come in flavours such as carbonara and marinara sauce with cherry tomatoes—and the puff pastry butter toast, a tower of toast-like pastry topped with a generous scoop of ice cream.

MIS Coffee Club

Newly opened in the bustling dining destination of Hoi Kwong Street, Make It Simple (MIS) Coffee Club sports a minimalist interior with wooden furnishings, embellished by an intricate panel of flora and fauna as the artistic centrepiece. Patrons are guaranteed a simple and fuss-free experience at MIS. Specialities such as the Shakerato, an irresistible cold brew shaken to perfection, is the MIS Coffee Club signature. For food, take your pick from a selection of salads and ciabatta sandwiches.

Kopi Coffee and Eatery

Newly opened in Tai Po is Kopi Coffee and Eatery, a pet-friendly café with a bright, refreshing, and leafy interior. On top of coffee, Kopi offers a selection of snacks, mains, desserts, and speciality drinks such as a passion fruit espresso soda and a matcha latte. You can expect healthy options on the food menu, such as the wholesome Buddha bowl, packed with high-protein and high-fibre ingredients such as chickpeas, dragon fruit, butternut squash, quinoa, and Japanese onsen egg, as well as also indulgent desserts such as waffles.

10 Foo Kwai

This cosy café is a newcomer to the Tai Kok Tsui neighbourhood, where patrons can immerse themselves in a homely ambience enhanced by charmingly mismatched furnishings. Those of us who attended primary school in Hong Kong will encounter a nostalgic reminder in the form of an old-school classroom desk and chairs tucked away in a corner. Try out 10 Foo Kwai’s signature coffee combo, a duo of espresso and dirty single-origin Yunnan coffee. Pair your drink with churros, which come in pistachio, vanilla, and caramel flavours.

Pâtisserie Millefeuille

Newly opened on Stauton Street in Central is Pâtisserie Millefeuille, a French bakery offering premium treats and your usual roster of coffee and other beverages in a bright, tastefully appointed space. In this elegant dessert café, patrons are treated to a wide selection of handmade sandwiches and pastries, all crafted by chef Lionel Bodros. The millefeuille is—of course—a must-try, while the Mont Blanc and lemon tart are also worth a taste.
