Walks are one of the essential parts of a dog’s day—it mentally stimulates them and releases their pent-up energy, especially if they have been staying idle all day at home while their humans are out at work. Metropolitan areas, in particular, are not unusually great for dogs who need an active lifestyle, and living in a high-density city without backyards or open spaces will restrict your dog’s daily exercise. We often walk our dogs in the park to make up for their inactivity, but just how many of these beautiful green spaces are open to our furry friend?

It might not seem this way when living in Hong Kong, but you’ll actually find numerous beautiful parks scattered across the territories that allow pets! Hong Kong also has wide-open spaces, beach parks, country parks, and gardens with complete facilities that you and your pet can visit. Read on for the best dog-friendly parks in Hong Kong for your next “paw-some” morning or afternoon walk!

Quarry Bay Promenade

Enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of Hong Kong crown jewel—Victoria Harbor—at the Quarry Bay Promenade! Aesthetically landscaped with a timber boardwalk and granite paving stretching from Tai Koo Shing to Quarry Bay, it even offers a 2,500-square-metre pet garden for your pups to run around in! You are going to love coming back with your dog for a walk, as the promenade is set against magnificent views, and the magnificent harbour complements the rows of skyscrapers along the shore. If you are walking your dog with your kids, Quarry Bay also boasts a popular cycling park, so the little ones can practice their cycling skills and stay active while you are taking evening walks.

Butterfly Valley Road Pet Garden

Butterfly Valley Road may not be home to the most spectacular species of butterflies—in fact, if it’s butterflies you’re after, check out the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve—but it was built to be the largest pet park in Kowloon! Sitting above the basin of the Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel, the park encompasses an area of 7,000 square meters, with a design based on patterned footpaths and raft-like wooden platforms. Offering various playground equipment, such as pipe tunnels and hoops, your dog can move around and jump to its heart’s content. Butterfly Valley Road Pet Garden also has dog waste collection bins, drinking fountains for pets, and hand-washing facilities.

Cyberport Waterfront Park

Cyberport Waterfront Park is well known for seafront jogging trails and cycling trails, in addition to being one of Hong Kong’s best picnic spots! It’s also popular for providing a recreational space for pets and their owners. Cyberport Waterfront Park is located in the luxurious southside neighbourhood of Telegraph Bay with a stunning view of Lamma Island. It boasts a vast area of grass where you can let your pet run around off-leash. Cyberport Waterfront Park also has shaded trees where you can read a book or catch up with friends, and several taps to keep your dog hydrated. It’s a great choice for family outings, especially if you’re planning on bringing your pup along.

Penfold Park

Penfold Park is a favourite amongst local Hongkongers and their dogs, so expect it to be packed during weekends. Aside from being an awesome place for pet walks and exercises, the park also often serves as a venue for pet care and animal welfare events. Here, your dog can roam around and race against other pups on the luscious green lawns! Penfold Park also features man-made lakes, where dogs can jump in and paddle. Managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Penfold Park is open to the public daily but is closed on horse racing days.

Kwun Tong Ferry Pier Square Pet Garden

Kwun Tong Ferry Pier Square Pet Garden is easily accessible, no matter whether you are driving or commuting—it’s just next to the bus terminal and public car parks. However, with all the nearby roads, make sure you keep a tight hold of your pup, especially when crossing the street. Kwun Tong Ferry Pier Square Pet Garden has been renovated over the past years and upgraded with several new features installed, such as play equipment for dogs, drinking fountains, and pet latrines. Our favourite element in the Kwun Tong Pet Garden is its balancing wood, which is perfect for simple doggy core exercises! To catch a breath-taking harbour view at sunset, go for a walk is in the afternoon.

Wan Po Road Pet Garden

Wan Po Road Pet Garden is a popular dog-spot in Hong Kong, located near the Tseung Kwan O South Waterfront Promenade and accessible via Lohas Park MTR station. Its unique features include separate areas for large and small dogs where they can socialise and play. In fact, it has three areas for dogs, with the first one reserved for large dogs, the second for smaller dogs, and the third one for all sizes. And just like any other dog park, Wan Po Road Pet Garden has an accessible water fountain, pet latrines, bins, and a pet shower area.

Tamar Park

Tamar Park’s design revolves around the concept of perpetual green. It boasts of verdant lawns complete with two-sizeable circular dog parks, a perfect spot for your pup to play with other dogs! You’ll find the dedicated pet area to be grassy and fenced, so you’re free to let your dog roam around. Tamar Park is also home to magnificent water features, a café, a floating platform, and an amphitheatre. Located near the Legislative Council and Central Government Offices, it’s also a great place to get a view of Victoria Harbour. Just a few minutes away from the Admiralty MTR station, you’ll often find yoga classes and music festivals held here as well.

Tsuen Wan Pet Garden

You can find the Tsuen Wan Pet Garden at the Central Western District Promenade near the Tsuen Wan MTR Station. Your dog can go off-leash in the park’s circular yard for socialisation, runs, and plays. There is no need to worry about your pup running off, either, since it’s a fenced-in area. Tsuen Wan Pet Garden offers various facilities, such as garden benches, dog latrines, bins, a turf area, and a hand-washing facility—which is especially useful for dog owners. However, the pet garden is smaller than most pet-friendly parks in Hong Kong so if you have a big dog, you might find the place a bit crowded at times.

Victoria Peak Garden

Last but not least, there’s Victoria Peak Garden where you’ll want to bring your dog for a morning walk. Victoria Peak Garden is a Chinese-style garden and the former site of a summer residence for Hong Kong’s governor, offering beautiful views of the west and south of Hong Kong Island—the perfect draw for visitors to add this spot to their Hong Kong itinerary when in town. Its pet garden features spectacular views and green lawns with park benches where you can have a picnic and enjoy the breeze and scenery. If you want to have a simple workout with your pup, take him to the Peak Circular Walk and prepare yourself to see the beautiful panoramic view of the Central.
