FUN NEWS: Introducing The 'Earfie'

By Sophie Pettit 23 July 2015
Forget pouting into your mobile phone in a bar or at the beach, because there's a new kind of selfie in town - the earfie! Nope, Hong Kongers haven't lost their minds, they're jumping on the bandwagon of the latest social media campaign with a special cause. Spearheaded by local startup PhatRice, the campaign works by asking Hong Kongers to post their ear selfie, now lovingly nicknamed ‘earfie', along with the hashtag #canyouhearus and a link to PhatRice’s website, where you can donate to local charity Po Leung Kuk and help buy high quality hearing aids for their elderly care community. Organisers hope to raise $50,000 through the quirky campaign, which has already garnished strong support from local artists and celebrities including actor Leung Lit Wai, singer Candy Lo, and pop star G.E.M., whose famous lobe received over 30,000 likes in the first few hours of posting. [masterslider id="126"] "With 25% of those who are 65 and older, and half of those who are 75 and older, struggling with disabling hearing loss, it's likely that we all know someone who is effected," PhatRice Co-Founder Anthony Lance tell us. "It's really eye-opening to learn about the high numbers of community members with hearing problems, many of whom do not have family members who can afford the high-cost hearing aids for them. We need to make this campaign a success because we can't let them down!” Well there certainly doesn't appear to be any risk of that happening, with the message spreading fast by word-of-mouth from those who have posted and challenged their friends to do so as well. So, if you're fed up of those self-indulgent selfies flying around in cyperspace, and you're not too self-conscious about your little lobes, you might want to try something fun for charity and share your first ever ‘earfie!’
