By Contributed content 17 April 2019
As a parent, one of the biggest challenges you can face is helping everyone at home live a healthier and happier life. With such hectic lifestyles in Hong Kong, it can often be a challenge to find enough time to eat together and exercise properly – but it's not impossible. These easy, actionable solutions from guest blogger Jessica Max are a good place to start.

Stay Hydrated

First and foremost, you should look to make positive changes to hydration. Simply upping everyone’s water intake is a cheap way to live healthier lives, using a calculator such as the one from Trusted Alkaline provides an easy way to judge what you should be drinking. Water intake keeps fluid levels high, and it also plays a big role in helping you to avoid the need to snack. This keeps weight gain down and also does a lot to make sure that you and your family are going to eat less junk. If you're looking to lose weight specifically, check out these useful tips.

Concentrate on Your Diet

You should look – both parents and children – to start changing how you eat. Try mixing in vegetables and fruits with other ingredients, for example fruit can make porridge more enjoyable and help to improve nutritional intake. Alongside getting your children to drink more water, it's a good idea to educate them on the importance of food quality. Avoid quick fix, ready-made meals or fast food, as these often contain many artificial ingredients and are high in salt and sugar which is detrimental to your health.

Eat Together and Eat Right

The best way to change how you all eat is to eat together. Eating together sets a positive tone around the table, and makes it easier to put positive habits into practice. This also means that no-one has to eat alone or be tempted to take the easy route and consume cheap, lackluster food. Eat together, and you can easily make big changes to benefit the whole family.

Get More Exercise

If you're finding it hard to get the kids off the couch or away from their games consoles, then a shopping trip, or similar activity, is always a good way to get them out of the home and walking around. While it does depend on your own lifestyle and the lifestyle of your children, there are plenty of activities to do with children in Hong Kong, both indoor and outside. Just take a look at these fun ideas.

Get More Involved

One of the biggest problems you might face is that you find it hard to get engaged in the lifestyle of your children. Many parents struggle here, so you are not alone on that front. A good solution is to try and spend some time injecting yourself into the lives of your children without being intrusive. By the same token, you should try and get your children a bit more intrigued and interested in what you do with your spare time.

Creat Structure

Often, the best way to make a positive change to your family's quality of life is to create structure. Spend some time coming up with specific days where you take part in a particular activity with your children, for example, you could host world food day every Tuesday where you and the kids make food together from a specific country. Saturday could be a shopping day, Sunday could be sports day, and so on. Repetition will eventually help your family to overcome any early uncertainty or lack of enthusiasm.

Make the Kitchen Fun Again

Does your little boy or girl look a little bored sitting there slicing the veggies? The why not liven things up and take turns doing others roles. Have some fun – a bit of extra clean-up is well worth it if things happen to get a little messy. You should always look to make the kitchen a place where fun and productivity are commonplace, as this will help to create a healthier, happier atmosphere where everyone has their own personal input.

Set a Good Example

As a parent, it’s your duty to set a positive example for your children. From not losing your temper over small things, to being serious about exercise and cleaner eating, you need to set the tone for the rest of the home. If you lead by example and strive to inspire everyone to live better lives, then the outcome can only ever be positive. Let's not forget, children tend to copy everything their parents hear, say, and do, so as long as this all points to a healthy, happy home, then you're covered.

Listen to You Children

Lastly but most importantly, listen to your children. Yes, it is your house. Yes, you are the adult. But no, you're not always right and age does not always guarantee wisdom. Try and give your children some credit: if they contest a point you make and seem to back it up, then don’t ignore their statements. Instead, listen to what they have to say, and you will be much more likely to create a sense of harmony and mutual respect. If you want your children to take on board all (or any) of the points above, then you need to listen to them too. In short, create a much more mutually balanced home, and you might find that everyone who lives there can just be themselves and enjoy life together.
