Modern izakaya Roji debuts new lunch set menu and delivery

By Localiiz Branded | 18 February 2022

Although bars and eateries are now left shuttered after 6 pm, nighthawk hangout and neighbourhood favourite Roji has brought its contemporary izakaya experience forward to daylight hours. Now offering convenient delivery and lunch service in the enveloping comfort of its secluded backstreet space, the new menu at Roji is one that recreates the convivial izakaya mood through the restaurant’s signature Japanese flavours.

Food

Each sumptuous lunch spread is available between 11.30 am and 3 pm on weekdays and offers three courses ($178) with options for additional beverages. Hungry diners start off with two appetisers, followed by a choice of mains accompanied by either house-made Roji signature rice folded with brilliant subtle flavours or springy mentaiko udon. Dessert rounds off the meal, but coffee is also available as an alternative finale to your meal.

Whet your appetite with refreshing small plates that accentuate the restaurant’s use of fresh ingredients. Have your share of the addictive edamame, where every morsel explodes with bursts of shichimi togarashi, followed by a mizuna salad tossed with thin leek, seaweed, baby sardines, and a sharp homemade apple vinegar dressing.

Proceed to the main event, where the yakiniku Wagyu ($98) is cooked to perfection in teriyaki sauce, and served under a mound of shimeji mushrooms and wasabi. For something lighter that still retains immense flavour, the reworked Polmard beef tartare—made from premium aged cuts marinated in a brine of red wine-pickled scallions, yuzu koshō, and topped with chives and butter sauce—is a star choice.

If chicken speaks to your heart, then look no further than the chicken katsu, which bookends a crispy, menchi-katsu-style chicken fillet alongside a sando spun from pork and beef mince between two thick and fluffy slices of bread, made complete with dashes of smoky tonkatsu sauce, secret spice mix, cabbage salad, and mustard mayo.

Drinks and cocktails

Round it all off with a drink (or two) to really hit the spot and revel in the izakaya vibes. Bevvies on offer include the refreshing yuzu ginger lemonade ($38) to perk you up and soothe a full belly or a mocktail ($48) of your choosing. If you are feeling up for a tipple, opt for a delicious highball ($58) on tap or a glass of wine ($78).

What’s more, Saturdays at Roji allow you to take advantage of an impressive 90-minute free-flow package that pours out unlimited house sake and fizzing highballs from a bespoke highball dispenser. All-day dining off the à la carte menu is also available between opening hours, accompanying your libations with tantalising bites.

Delivery

Difficult times call for flexible adaptations, and the current in-restaurant dining restrictions served as the spark behind the debut of the modern izakaya’s new home delivery service.
