PHD launches a black sugar bubble tea pizza in Hong Kong

By Ching Yuen 7 January 2020

We know Hongkongers love their bubble tea. With the variations of black sugar bubble tea shops and flavoured desserts popping up across cafés and restaurants in Hong Kong and the snaking queues that inevitably follow, the obsession with this drink knows no bounds. But to what extent do you really love black sugar bubble tea? Would you be able to love a black sugar bubble tea-flavoured pizza?

PHD Hong Kong announced via their Facebook page yesterday that they are introducing an all-new pizza flavour, and thus the limited-edition Black Sugar Bubble Tea-Flavoured Pizza ($68) was born. They also emphasised that anything combined with black sugar bubble tea gives it an upgrade (truthfully, we’re not sure we agree with this statement) and that the crossover is something that the Hong Kong audience has been anticipating for quite a while. The divisive and controversial pie boasts a layer of PHD’s signature cheese, covered with a smattering of tapioca pearls and drizzled with black sugar sauce; it’s almost as if a cup of black sugar bubble tea was spilt on top of the pizza.

Some discerning Hong Kong diners have already experienced the pizza, describing it as being “unforgettable”, though we don’t know if that’s supposed to be a good thing. Imagine stretchy, savoury cheese meeting sugary tapioca pearls (that are stickier than usual after being baked) and we’re sure “unforgettable” is just the tip of the iceberg. So far, we have been exposed to black sugar bubble tea soufflé pancakes, ice cream, ramen, hot dogs–so we’re surprised it took so long for black sugar bubble tea pizza make its way to the restaurants of Hong Kong. Anyone with trypophobia should probably stay far, far away from this questionable pizza, but for anyone else who is game for an “unforgettable” culinary journey... well, dig in!
