Small and Cool Arts Month Events You Might Not Have Heard About

By Jenny Leung 17 March 2017
We're all familiar with the biggies - the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Art Basel, Art Central etc, but as great as they are, there are so many art events going on throughout the city, all vying for our attention, than many of the smaller ones can easily fall through the cracks. And that is a shame, because some of them are really ace. So to keep you in the loop, here's our humble - and by no means exhaustive - list of some of the best arts month happenings that you might not know about, but definitely should.

Jerkface at Chôm Chôm

Either you'll be intimately familiar with the two nouns used in the headline or you're very confused right now. Let me explain. Jerkface is a prolific - and very talented - artist/graffiti artist from New York who specialises in playful reimagining's of pop culture iconography (pictured above). Chôm Chôm is a very good Vietnamese restaurant. It's all starting to make sense now. Jerkface will be working his magic on the wall next to Chôm Chôm and unveiling his latest masterpiece at a mini reveal party for all to enjoy. Glad we cleared that up. When: March 20, (9.30pm) Where: Chôm Chôm, 58 Peel St, Central How much: Free Click here for more information

Abstraction of the World

A group exhibition borne from a collaboration between Duddell's and Biennale of Sydney, and curated by Mami Kataoka, Artistic Director of the Biennale’s 21st edition. Abstraction of the World will focus on how cosmic space and natural phenomena have been depicted in abstract art from the Asia Pacific region, presenting works by acclaimed and respected artists from the region including Mit Jai Inn (Thailand), George Tjungurrayi (Australia), and Haegue Yang (South Korea / Germany). When: March 20 - July 10 Where: Duddell's, 3/F, Shanghai Tang Mansion, 1 Duddell Street, Central How much: Free  Click here for more information

A landmark exhibition of the famed photographers visit to China in the 80s. The collection includes over 200 shots chronicling Warhol's trip. If you have any interest in photography, this is a must see! When: Until April 2 Where: The Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Rd Central, Central How much: Free  Click here for more information

Absolut Art Bar – ‘Room Service’

A collaboration between the vodka behemoths and Portuguese-born, Hong Kong-based artist João Vasco Paiva, Room Service is the artist’s vision of a timeless oasis where the contemporary world and nature coincide. Apparently it was inspired by the 1998 film The Thin Red Line, because why the hell not. Throughout the month, Room Service will be putting on a litany of live acoustic shows and DJ sets, as well as some fancy thematic cocktails - Fletcher, Private Witt, and Paddy Button - with fancy ingredients in them. Like pepper. Told you it was fancy.

When: March 17 – April 2 Where: Potato Head, 100 Third Street, Sai Ying Pun How much: Free  Click here for more information

Perrier Jouët Garden of Wonder

Throwing their hat into the ring for arts month, Perrier Jouët’s Garden of Wonder is a lovely retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Celebrating its deep-seated passion for nature and art, the premier champagne house is inviting wine and art aficionados to get lost in a beautiful oasis and enjoy the new permanent Cuvée, Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs, while experiencing French digital artist Miguel Chevalier’s mesmerising video installation, 'Extra Natural'. Guests can register for private tasting sessions or join one of the Flower Pressing Workshops. There's also a 'Surprise Champagne Happy Hour' hosted during the week (announced on Facebook) where the first fifty guests will enjoy a complimentary glass of Blanc de Blancs. Lovely.
When: Until March 26, (midday-8.30pm) Where: Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty How much: Free Click here for more information

Fish 'n' Chips

A solo exhibition of selected works from British graffiti pop-artist Szabotage. The Fish 'n' Chips collection is inspired by the artist's signature Koi fish character and casino chips, both of which are symbols of good fortune and wealth in Eastern and Western cultures. Fish 'n' also expresses hyper-British visual themes and features pieces from his other collection, I can, which has imagery painted on to deconstructed metal cans as a means of portraying the intrusion of metal cans in everyday life. When: March 29 - May 11 Where: Art Supermarket, 1/F, Asiarich, 5 Staunton Street, Soho How much: Free Click here for more information

LKF Savouring Art Month

Returning for its second year, LKF Group's Savouring Art and Exhibitions campaign will see twelve restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong and California Tower create their special, thematic dishes and accompanying drinks. Going along with this year’s theme of 'Colour of Ingredients', expect the participating restaurants – which includes favourites such as CÉ LA VI, Kyoto Joe, and Mercato – to come up with some bright, playful, and delicious plates. Where: Lan Kwai Fong (full restaurant list here) When: Until March 31 How much: Various Click here for more information and to book

Lan Kwai Fong Savouring Art – Vertical Gallery

Featuring over fourty pieces of world-famous print paintings and sculptures, from internationally renowned artists including Bansky, D*Face, Damien Hirst, and many more, Hong Kong’s first ever 'Vertical Gallery' is a worthy addition to arts month. Some of the most recognisable imagery from contemporary art has been totally reworked, allowing them to take a whole new aesthetic prominence. Seeing Banksy’s Flower Bomber as a kind of action figure is fascinating, propagating his influence on pop culture. When: Until March 31 Where: Various restaurants within California Tower, Lan Kwai Fong How much: Free Click here for more information

Zaha Hadid: There Should Be No End To Experimentation

The first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker prize in architecture, Zaha Hadid has left an indelible mark on modern architecture. The exhibition features a montage video of Hadid’s architectural projects over the past 25 years, alongside her paintings, calligraphic drawings, and rarely seen private sketchbooks that show her complex thoughts about architecture’s forms and relationships. When: Until April 6 Where: ArtisTree, 1/F, One Island East How much: Free Click here for more information

Bit.Fall by Julius Popp

A pioneering multimedia work that combines technology and engineering, BIT.FALL uses a unique algorithm connected to the Internet in real time to look for popular buzzwords through different newsfeed channels, which are then displayed as words through hundreds of water droplets in a curtain of water. If that sounds like some next level, bonkers science fiction s***, then you're right, it absolutely is. It's pure sorcery. You should check it out. When: Until April 6 Where: Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty How much: Free Click here for more information

SOHO 189 Art Lane Second Anniversary

One of the most exciting and diverse art destinations in Hong Kong, SOHO 189 Art Lane encompasses four galleries - Galerie Huit, Leo Gallery, Pearl Lam Galleries, and Puerta Roja. For the destination's second anniversary, and in time for the Art Basel week, the four galleries will present an inspirational and diverse selection of four solo shows by accomplished international artists from China (Xie Rong, Tan Ping), India (Thukral & Tagra) and Venezuela (Carlos Cruz-Diez). All the works presented by the galleries will be showcased in Hong Kong for the first time. When: Throughout Arts Month and beyond (click here for each exhibitions duration) Where: Soho 189, 189 Queen's Road West, Sai Ying Pun How much: Free Click here for more information

Twenty-Five Minutes Older

This one's neat. Hong Kong artist Kingsley Ng’s 'Twenty-Five Minutes Older' will create an 'altered reality' and allow tram passengers to experience Hong Kong in a new way – in reverse. Capturing images of passing street life, the scenes displayed inside the tram will be accompanied by spoken extracts from Liu Yichang’s popular stream-of-consciousness novella Tête-bêche. If that sounds a little vague, I think that's what they're going for. As far as we can tell, it's a tram-ride-cum-multi-sensory-experience. The name just being a friendly reminder that you're going to die. Great. When: March 20 - 25 (tram rides will be happening constantly throughout the day) Where: The Pawn/Western Market How much: Free (you have to book your spot though!) Click here to book

Senior editor

Born in Hong Kong and raised in the UK, Jenny grew up with the best of both worlds. She loves just about anything to do with music and doesn’t shy away from belting out a tune or two when it comes to karaoke. If she’s not out and about exploring the city and practising her photography skills, she’s probably tucked up in bed with a book or glued to her laptop doing her online shopping.
