Now that we are in December, we trust you have opened the first windows of your advent calendar and planned your Christmas feast in anticipation of the holidays. While you are patiently waiting for Christmas to come, get yourself into the festive mood by admiring seasonal decorations and visiting markets that are popping up around town. From an enchanting fairy forest to snowy cabins in the woods, here are the best Christmas displays and markets to visit in Hong Kong this 2023.

Celebrate Christmas in snowy Moominvalley! The beloved Moomintroll from Tove Jansson’s illustrated books has arrived in MOSTown, gathering his friends Snorkmaiden, Snufkin, and Little My in a whimsical rendition of their fictional home. Visitors will be greeted by a giant inflatable Moomintroll as they approach Moominvalley, before meeting Snufkin on a wooden bridge. The best part of Moominvalley is the five-metre-tall winter house, which is a replica of the Moomins’ home.

Learn more about the Moominvalley animated TV series through detailed displays of illustrations and original drawings by author and illustrator Tove Jansson. Little ones can partake in an interactive adventure game on-site before visiting the Moomins pop-up store stocked with a variety of merchandise. Moomin will be making an appearance on Christmas Eve and Day—don’t miss the chance to meet the adorable Finnish forest troll!

Have a starry Christmas at Lee Tung Avenue! Themed “The Wishing Stars,” the iconic avenue is transformed into a “Corridor of Wishes.” Over a million lit-up stars stretch over the pedestrian walkway, and a giant Christmas star hangs above the Central Piazza. Accompanying this magnificent installation are two Nordic Christmas markets showcasing Swedish and Finnish crafts, gourmet items, and a meet-and-greet with Santa!

Visit Santa Paws the polar bear at Landmark this Christmas! The festive installation features a giant, snow-covered polar bear mountain, home to over 100 adorable animals donning festive garb, a cosy cabin, and a ski lift. A series of fun-filled experiences awaits on Mount Santa Paws, including a five-metre-long snowy sled slide, VR skiing, and an exhilarating snowball fight. Wind down at the Santa Paws ski chalet and don’t forget to take pictures with Santa Paws and friends to commemorate your visit!

Christmas is golden and full of surprises at Elements this year! Experience the magic of gifting at the “Merry Dreamscape: The Gifting Magic” display. Occupying a space in the mall is a golden tree forest with an eight-metre-tall Christmas tree in its centre, surrounded by mounts of presents and gift boxes. Visitors are treated to live carol and dance performances at the Christmas tree forest while Santa and his elves will be making an appearance on Sundays in December.

The atrium at IFC is transformed into a picturesque winter holiday destination this Christmas! Reminiscent of ski lodges up in the Alps, the “Snow Park” is a resort complete with cable cars, a cosy glass cabin, a ski lift, and—of course—a Christmas tree. A series of activities are on offer around the snowy park, including the interactive “Snowiverse,” an ice fishing challenge, and a ski simulator.

Step into an enchanting forest at Pacific Place this Christmas! A “Fairy Light Forest” has sprouted in all corners of the mall; beautiful Christmas tree displays are complemented by whimsical greenery, lanterns, and mushrooms. Stroll around the magical garden and greet forest animals as you make your way to the Snowfall hallow for a sparkling light show. In the depths of the lush forest, you will find the Christmas wish cavern surrounded by dancing fairies ready to grant you a wish!

Santa’s grove is nestled in snow-covered gardens and surrounded by Christmas trees decorated with vibrant baubles and shimmering tinsels. Stop by the fairy lake for a moment of peace and calm before heading over to the “Gifts of the Forest” workshop space decorated with festive lights and a giant wreath. Finally, follow the fairies out onto Starstreet Precinct’s pavement, lined with giant flowers and more dancing fairies.

Cityplaza

Spend Christmas with Mickey and friends at Cityplaza! The “Grow with Love” campaign fuses celebration with green living through an interactive scavenger hunt and planting activity. Visitors are greeted by a giant Mickey Mouse outside Mickey’s garden cottage, a cosy winter lodge filled with decorations crafted with upcycled plastic. From there, visitors are invited to embark on a hunt to find plant-growing essentials, making stops at Chip ‘n Dale’s Nut Hut, Donald’s Water Wheel, Minnie’s Sunny Hut, and Groot’s Greenhouse of Love. Those who complete the challenge can redeem attractive prices.

Christmas celebrations are out of this world at Harbour City! A party of alien bears have landed at the Ocean Terminal Forecourt to wish everyone a merry “Spacemas” this December, bringing with them futuristic rockets and a festive launch site. Enter through the five-metre-tall rainbow neon arch and greet adorable bear astronauts! Outdoor attractions include a lightspeed elevator, a zero-gravity cabin, an exploration shuttle, an interstellar transport belt, and a 10-metre-tall Christmas tree rocket. If it gets too chilly by the harbour, step through the Christmas tree gate and enter the indoor neon space station, where visitors walk through a rainbow corridor and admire otherworldly planets!

Discovery Bay

Have a romantic Christmas at Discovery Bay! Visitors will arrive to find the DB clock tower transformed into an elegant cathedral complete with decorative pillars and stained glass windows. Close to the cathedral are four sets of glowing angels and sparkling Christmas lights, adding a whimsy touch to the ensemble. At DB North Plaza, you’ll find a six-metre-tall ribbon Christmas tree. A lighting ceremony will take place on Christmas Eve, complete with festive parades, music, and dance performances, under artificial snowfall.

Don’t miss out on the Christmas Sunday markets at Discovery Bay this December! Over 100 local brands are offering a wide range of handicrafts, clothing, and festive items for you to browse through—the perfect place to pick out a gift.

The “Christmas Cuckoo at MCP” display features a forest cabin with a cuckoo clock surrounded by snowmen, decorated Christmas trees, and Santa’s sleigh. In MCP Central, visitors can explore the history of artisanal cuckoo clocks with eight masterpieces on show. A Christmas market is also being held at MCP Discovery till 1 January, featuring a series of German speciality products, festive decorations, and handicrafts.
