Casting Call! Could Your Kid Be the Star of Priscilla Queen of the Desert?

By Sophie Pettit 1 June 2017
If you were giddy with joy to hear that the stage spectacular Priscilla Queen of the Desert is rolling into town this September 29, then you'll be thrilled to know that producers are on the lookout for four Hong Kong kids to join the glittering cast in the role of Benji.

That's right, the "feel-good show with a big joyous heart” is on its way to the Lyric Theatre at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and your kid could be the star of the show. For those who aren't familiar with the heart-warming tale, Benji is the son of lead role Tick, and the real reason Tick convinces his 'colourful' friends Bernadette and Felicia to head off into the Australian desert onboard a battered old bus named Priscilla to perform as drag artists at a casino in Alice Springs. Based on the Oscar-winning hit movie of the same name, the wildly fresh and funny musical has kept audiences dancing in the aisles for over a decade with a parade of dance-floor anthems including It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and Boogie Wonderland. Now your little ones have the chance to grab a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the all-singing, all-sparkling cast. So what does it take? [caption id="attachment_93011" align="aligncenter" width="628"] Hallelujah![/caption] Producers are looking for four boys who fit the height and character brief outlined below to alternate the role:
  • Male with a playing age of 8 years old (suggested ages between 8-11 years old, age limit 7 years at time of audition)
  • Strong acting and singing ability required
  • Approximate height of 140cm
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Unbroken voice
  • Some musical theatre experience is preferred, but not essential
  • All ethnic groups are welcome
The registration deadline is June 21 and auditions for the role will be held at the Lyric Theatre on June 25, which may include a singing, acting, and basic dance section. Finalists will be chosen and their audition will be filmed and viewed by the creative team in London who will make the final casting decision.

All successful applicants will be contacted no later than July 24 and boys chosen for the show will be required for a one-day rehearsal on September 23, plus a five-day rehearsal period from September 25 at the Lyric Theatre.

So if you think you have a budding star at home who just so happens to fit the description above, download the application form now and see if they get their lucky break.

Good luck kids!
