To celebrate our love for this creamy, buttery seafood, we’ve rounded up ten of the best sea urchin dishes in town. 1. Handrolls at TMK
TMK, the new kid on the block, is a handroll and sake bar that embodies the energy of a punk rock superstar. Decorated with stickers and graffiti—there’s even a motorcycle on display!—the restaurant offers playful, modern Japanese dishes. Their Hokkaido Sea Urchin Handroll comes with yuzu zest, shiso, and wasabi, topped with crispy rice balls for a crunch of texture. The price of the handroll varies according to the market price of the ingredient that day.

2. Tostadas at Chino
K-Town’s modern Mexican style restaurant, Chino, incorporates Japanese influences into their food and cooking style, creating a slew of unique dishes and combinations. Taste the ocean with their Scallop and Uni Tostada ($90) on a toasted tortilla, where you’ll find layers of textural seafood stacked on top of each other, with diced tomatoes and shredded seaweed sprinkled on top. These addictive tostadas are so delicious, you’ll be ordering seconds in no time.

3. Spaghetti aglio e olio at Fishsteria
Specialising in sustainable seafood dishes, Fishsteria offers up all kinds of glorious ocean delights with their traditional Italian cuisine. However, it’s the Sea Urchin Chitarra ($288) that has caught our eye. Made with chitarra spaghetti, a variety of egg pasta typical of Abruzzo, Italy, the dish is made aglio e olio-style and topped off with luscious, melt-in-your-mouth pieces of Japanese sea urchin.

4. Risotto at Locanda dell’Angelo
Sea urchin risotto may be the match made in heaven that we’ve been waiting for. The buttery texture of uni blends seamlessly with risotto’s creamy consistency, creating the most mouth-watering fusion. Locanda dell’Angelo’s Hokkaido Sea Urchin Risotto ($328) has a secret ingredient to it to it as well—freshly-grated wasabi. While the wasabi isn’t overpowering, you’ll be savouring every bite just to feel the subtle, spicy burn.

5. Ramen at Fujiyama 55
Tired of small portions of sea urchin? Head to Fujiyama 55 for their Sea Urchin Tsukemen ($398). Not only do you get a plentiful portion of sea urchin and salmon roe, but the dipping soup is also infused with creamy uni. Perfect for days when you want to indulge in a hearty bowl of ramen. Order a bowl of cheesy Japanese Rice ($20) afterwards to soak up the leftover broth so nothing goes to waste.

6. 18-layer cup at S2 Teppanyaki
Tucked away in Jordan, S2 Teppanyaki is best known for their staggering 18-Layer Sea Urchin Cup ($398). While only four layers of this signature dish are actually sea urchin, the other 14 are drool-worthy sashimi that goes hand-in-hand with the Hokkaido uni. Get ready to dive into layers of caviar, crab meat, scallop, shrimp, and more for a feast to remember.

7. Egg custard at Towada Sushi
Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Towada Sushi’s clean, Japanese wooden decor will draw you in at first glance. Using fresh produce flown in daily from Japan, the restaurant is famous for its authentic flavours and reasonable prices. Although they do have Sea Urchin Nigiri on offer, it’s the Sea Urchin Steamed Egg Custard Dish ($38) that has captured our hearts (and stomachs). It features a silky-smooth egg custard with fresh sea urchin delicately placed on top.

8. Hotpot at J Pot
Bringing hotpot to a whole new level, J Pot is a relatively new hot pot joint in Causeway Bay. Give their MSG-free Sea Urchin Soup Base a try and pair it with the Premium HYAMA A5 Wagyu Platter ($768) for an extravagant meal to please your taste buds. Add on choices of meat, seafood, and vegetables for the full monty. Open until 12am daily, come with friends for a late-night bite.

9. Fine-dining at Amber
2 Michelin-starred French restaurant, Amber, may have stopped serving the popular Hokkaido Sea Urchin in Langoustine Jello, but their new sea urchin dish might be even better. Assembled with cauliflower, lobster jello, and a generous dollop of caviar, the dish resembles an art piece that mirrors the elegance and beauty of the restaurant’s interior. The dish is part of the Amber Experience Tasting Menu ($1,788) for dinner.

10. Fried rice at Arashiyama Japanese Restaurant
Calling all fried rice fans—make your way over to Arashiyama Japanese Restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui to try the Sea Urchin Fried Rice ($138). Unlike some fried rice dishes where the portion of rice dominates over everything else, here the sea urchin flavour is prominent with every bite. The spring onions are a welcoming touch to the dish, balancing out any greasiness from the fried rice, making it easier for you to gobble up the entire plate.
