Hong Kong's Hottest BBQ Spots

By Sophie Pettit 28 June 2018
Throw on your novelty pinny and grab some tongs, it's time to fire up the barbie. Before the summer heat reaches unbearable levels, now is prime time for long al fresco afternoons spent sizzling sausages and flipping burgers with your buddies. From DIY pits to fully catered affairs, we've sussed out the hottest barbecue spots around the city.

Free BBQ Pits

There are 50 LCSD barbecue sites across Hong Kong, with mountains of pits at each one - so we really aren't exaggerating when we say you've got hundreds to choose from. To help you find that prime spot first time, we've picked our six favourites. Just remember to pick up your own grill tops, charcoal, and lighter fluid before you set off.

Lo So Shing Beach, Lamma

If you're anything like us and prefer to enjoy your barbecued feast without being surrounded by hoards of other people, then Lo So Shing Beach (pictured above) is definitely one to check out. Gather all your supplies beforehand, hop on the ferry to Sok Kwu Wan, walk for 15 minutes, and stoke your coals at our favourite BBQ spot of them all.

How to get there: Catch the ferry to Sok Kwu Wan from Central Pier 4, join the Lamma Island Family Walk for around 15 minutes until you bear left and drop down onto Lo So Shing Beach.

Shek O Beach

A firm favourite - and for good reason - the public Shek O pits are only a stone's throw from the beach, and come complete with picnic tables, umbrellas, and a luscious green backdrop. This is a top spot for a lazy weekend session, plus, you're in the best place for a pre-feast dip in the ocean while the coals are burning. How to get there: Ride the MTR Island Line to Shau Kei Wan, head out of exit A3, and hop on bus number 9. Around half an hour later you'll arrive in Shek O. Make a beeline for the beach and you'll find the pits.

Shing Mun Free BBQ Pits Hong Kong

Shing Mun

A personal favourite of our General Manager, Shing Mun's pits (pictured above) overlook a picturesque reservoir. While you're in the area, make sure you check out the Shing Mun Redoubt tunnels, which hark back to World War Two - but beware of the area's chimp population, or else your relaxing barbecue may turn into a monkey's tea party. How to get there: Take the MTR to Tsuen Wan, head out of exit A1, and catch minibus number 82. Hop off about 20 minutes later and fire up the barbie.

Pui O Beach

Tucked behind Lantau favourite Pui O Beach, these BBQ spots are perfect for refuelling after a long day on the sand. Why not make a day of it and rent some watersports equipment from the Treasure Island desk inside popular hangout Mavericks? Surf's up! How to get there: Catch the ferry to Mui O from Central Pier 6, hop on bus 1, 4, or 3M upon arrival, and ride for around 15 minutes (keep your eyes peeled for Pui O School). Then follow the signposts to the beach - the walk should only take you 5 minutes or so.

Clearwater Bay Free BBQ Pits Hong Kong

Clearwater Bay Country Park

In addition to BBQ pits, Clearwater Bay Country Park (pictured above) offers a nature walk, geographical rock formations, and a museum. On top of all that, this grassy spot is a popular place for kite-fliers, so don't forget to bring yours along. How to get there: Take the MTR to Choi Hung, head out of exit B, and hop on bus number 91 to Tai Au Mun. Wander along family-friendly Clear Water Bay Road for 1km, or alternatively drive right up to the spot if you have a car to hand.

Deep Water Bay

Down on the Southside of Hong Kong Island, Deep Water Bay is a gorgeous coastal location, but not even worth thinking about on the weekends, unless you fancy barbecuing in conditions which are sardines-in-a-can-like at best. During off peak times, however, the picturesque pits are up there with the best. How to get there: Ride the MTR Island line to Causeway Bay, and jump on bus number 5 on Cannon Street, near SOGO. Times can vary depending on traffic through the tunnel, but normally you'll be in Deep Water Bay within 15 to 20 minutes.
