HKTB invites “Super Fans” to decorate Hong Kong’s iconic skyline

To celebrate the triumphant return of arts in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) invited hundreds of its “Super Fans” to make their own mark on the city’s iconic skyline at a “Sip Back and Sketch” event.

Over the course of two days, HKTB invited hundreds of Super Fans and members of the press to unwind over a glass of wine and try their hand at a therapeutic, meditative drawing technique called Zentangle. The method, which uses repeated patterns to produce trippy, fractal-esque images, is also known as “mindful doodling” and is touted as an effective and creative way to relax.

Participants—who either attended in person at the West Kowloon Cultural District or via video call—were given a template of the Hong Kong skyline to decorate. Guided by an instructor, the Super Fans embellished instantly recognisable structures like the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and harbourside Observation Wheel with patterns inspired by iconic Hong Kong foods like char siu bao and pineapple buns.

Meanwhile, Super Fans who were on the ground in Central and Wan Chai delivered artistic inspiration in the form of live virtual tours. Super Fans got a VIP preview of the first Art Basel in Hong Kong in two years, as well as an informative walkthrough of street art on Shin Hing Street—including a little piece from the world-famous Invader!

The Super Fans campaign, which debuted during Chinese New Year in February, is an innovative global fan engagement programme that combines in-person events with virtual activities and tours to spread a positive buzz about Hong Kong and encourage visitors from abroad to head to Hong Kong once travel resumes.

Hundreds of Super Fans across Asia, Australasia, Europe, and the Americas have been recruited as part of HKTB’s global fan engagement programme. Super Fans, who comprise expats in Hong Kong as well as international “friends and fans” of Hong Kong, have taken part in Chinese New Year shopping activities, a virtual cocktail class led by Perfume Trees Gin, and other fun Hong Kong-related events.
