By Sophie Pettit 12 December 2018
While Hong Kong is famously easy to navigate, thanks to its fast and affordable public transport system, there may be times when you need to hire a car for various needs and functions. So, to help you out when that time comes around, we've gathered all the information you need to get the ball – or rather, wheels – rolling.

Requirements For Car Rental

In order to rent a car in Hong Kong, you must be 25 years old or above, and have a valid license of over 2 years that is accepted by Hong Kong. You will need to present your Hong Kong Identification Card (HKID) and a valid Hong Kong driving license, along with the completed relevant forms, at the car rental office. If you are visiting the city for a short amount of time, then a Hong Kong visitor visa allows you to drive if you have your overseas passport and international driving license with you.

Top Car Rental Companies

Generally speaking, the cost of hiring a car depends on several factors, including the duration of the lease, the car model, and special requirements such as extra trunk space and baby seats etc. However, given that demand for car rental is lower in Hong Kong than other cities, the options are fewer, meaning that prices can get pretty steep. If you are looking to hire a car for a short or long period of time, however, then these top rental companies – listed in order of rental price – should have something to suit every budget.

The Airbnb of car rental, allows you to find immediate, short-term, and economic car rentals that meet your budget and needs. Once you have downloaded the Carshare App onto your smartphone and set up an account, you can view the cars available for rent and filter the options by price range, number of seats, and additional features. You can also view photos and read the details of your desired model’s profile page. Daily rent starts from as little as $350, making this a highly appealing option if you're on a tight budget. Once you have selected your vehicle, you can choose your pickup and rental time, pay easily online, and message the car owner to confirm the booking. Each rental has a special insurance for car sharing too, so you can feel at ease when you're driving around the city.

Offering daily, weekly, and monthly car rental at competitive prices, HAWK is also a good option if you're on a limited budget. There are only six models to choose from, ranging from an affordable $480 to $990 a day, and $6,000 to $10,800 for the month, making this one of the cheaper options on our list. You can also choose to pay fixed monthly instalments if you want to rent longer term and budget easily in advance. Flexible terms are also available for rental of cars and specific commercial vehicles from 12 months up to 60 months, and all packages include road tax, insurance, government tax, maintenance, and replacement for the vehicle, among others benefits.
