Are you ready to get your eye on the viewfinder and finger on the shutter? It’s time for Hong Kong’s photographers to empty their memory cards, clean up their lenses, set their f-stop, and enroll in the 6th Annual Canon PhotoMarathon 2014. You might even benefit from hitting the gym a little – running around the city with a camera strapped around your shoulder is no easy task!
Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 2nd, the competition will host 2,400-contestants, 800 more openings than last year’s event. With prizes ranging from a Canon Image Showroom HK$18,000 Cash Coupon to a Canon Powershot SX600 Digital Compact camera, what photo maven wouldn’t be triggered?
If we’ve tickled your fancy, you must be wondering what you’ll be focusing your lenses on. Contestants can enrol in different categories starting this week. This year’s competition features the following:
Challenge Category
2013 Gold Award Winner for Light, Shadow, Motion - Mr Luk Ming Ngai
Three themes will be announced on November 2nd. Contestants will have to take a photograph that relates to each theme between 8:00am and 6:30pm while visiting two checkpoints along the way.
To enrol you must be 18 years old or above, hold a Hong Kong or Macau Identity card or passport, and use a camera with an interchangeable lens (Canon or any other brand) during the competition.
Enrollment period: August 11th to 17th 2014
Competition Time: November 2nd 2014 8:00 am to 6:30 pm
Contestant Quota: 800
Enrollment Fee: HK$280
Open Category
2013 Gold Award Winner for Mountain, Sea, Sky - Mr Lam Kam Tong
Two themes will be announced on November 2nd. Contestants must take one photograph for each theme from 9:00am to 6:30pm, visiting one checkpoint along the way.
This category allows younger contestants starting at 15 years old, but must hold a Hong Kong or Macau identity card or passport and have a DSLR (Canon or any other brand) for use during the competition.
Enrollment period: September 1st to 10th 2014
Competition Time: November 2nd 2014 9:00am – 6:30pm
Contestant Quota: 1,600
Enrollment Fee: HK$120
Online Category
2013 Silver Award Winner for Dot, Line, Surface - Ms Ng Tsui Wa
One theme will be announced on November 2nd. One photograph must be taken from 9:30am to 6:00pm, and must be submitted to the official website by 6:00pm.
This category allows contestants from 11 years old who hold a Hong Kong or Macau identity card or passport. A digital camera must be used to take the photograph and no phone photographs will be accepted. Sorry smartphone enthusiasts!

Enrollment Fee: Free
All enrollment fees will benefit the St. James’ Settlement, which aims to aid Hong Kong’s people in need through 57 service points around the city.
