The booze

As you may know, sake is a Japanese alcoholic drink made from fermented rice, traditionally drunk warm in palm-sized porcelain cups. Unsurprisingly, it’s the island country’s national beverage and well-loved across the world. Some sakes are even described as having umami notes, which further elevate the flavour of the drink. As an unprecedented event in Hong Kong, Sake Walk 2019 will feature over 80 sakes from 14 high-quality Japanese breweries. Some brewery owners and producers themselves will be present behind their booths for a unique opportunity to engage directly with the attendees and talk further about the distinctive qualities of their sakes.

The lowdown

Aside from encouraging increased recognition around longstanding Japanese sake brands, Sake Walk also aims to strengthen global awareness for environmental issues. As such, all attendees will be gifted a premium sake glass to be used for sampling during the event, which they may take home afterwards. Not only will this help reduce the amount of plastic used, but it also doubles as an event souvenir! In addition to that, Sake Walk 2019 will be a cashless event. Guests will use electronic tap-and-go cards with tokens to make purchases on the day. This also speeds up entry, so eager sake lovers can begin their tasting experience straight away! With various top-up stations set up around the venue, adding tokens to your card will be a breeze. The tap-and-go cards can be used for sake samples, masterclasses, food, soft drinks, and to buy bottles to take home from the shop.

It’s not just drinking

Attendees looking for engaging activities will delight in the masterclasses, held in partnership with AWSEC (Asia Wine Service & Education Centre) throughout the day. Sake enthusiasts can learn all about the basics on sake, what it’s made of, how it’s produced, how you should drink it, and how to pair it with food. Have you ever tried sparkling sake made with traditional Champagne methods? Now’s your chance! Sake booths will be set up around the private courtyard and lawn area, whereas rooms will be used for masterclasses, shops, and other activities. Masterclass tickets are available online for $140 and include a guided tasting of four sakes. Ahead of Sake Walk, Jebsen Fine Wines is hosting an exclusive sake pairing dinner on Thursday, September 19 in Café Parlour at House 1881. Featuring a five-course tasting menu with thoughtful sake pairings, brewery owners and producers will be in attendance. Tickets are priced $1,800 for this rare opportunity to meet the makers behind your favourite sakes.
