In the past few years, Hong Kong’s dining scene has been altered in unimaginable ways, with many staples and new ventures bidding farewell to the city. Blessedly, many more have adapted to the changing tides and stood the test of time. Celebrating the successes of local culinary talent, Michelin Guide Hong Kong and Macau has just announced its full selection for 2023, highlighting a total of 78 starred restaurants in Hong Kong and 17 starred restaurants in Macau.

With travel restrictions out of the way, Michelin Guide Hong Kong and Macau announced its 2023 star recipients at an exhilarating ceremony at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau today, just two weeks after announcing its recommendations for the Bib Gourmand distinctions, where six new entrants from Hong Kong were added to the list.

This year’s highly-anticipated results showcase Hong Kong and Macau’s continuing culinary excellence across various cuisines. Following a traditional set of evaluations, the restaurants were judged by anonymous Michelin inspectors according to a rigorous set of criteria that includes quality of products, mastery of flavour and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef represented, value-for-money, and consistency between visits.

Newly added one-star restaurants include DHK, Estro, Godenya, Kappo Rin, Nagamoto, Neighbourhood, Noi, and The Demon Celebrity from Hong Kong. Five Foot Road and The Huaiyang Garden join the one-star list for Macau.

New to the Michelin Guide Hong Kong and Macau 2023 with a two-star rating is Chinese restaurant Lai Ching Heen. Rùn also scored a promotion of two stars this year with its elevated Cantonese gastronomic offerings. Meanwhile, Mora in Hong Kong and IFTM Educational Restaurant in Macau are both newly honoured with the Michelin Green Star, an award that recognises restaurants offering the highest degree of sustainable gastronomy.

Championing the motto “pure, simple, and seasonal” in its culinary offerings, French-Japanese restaurant Ta Vie comes away with three stars this year, scoring one of the most respected statuses in the culinary world, while nine three-starred restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau have continued to maintain their prestige this year.

Three new categories have been introduced under the Michelin umbrella. The Sommelier Award celebrates the extensive knowledge and passion sommeliers have towards spirits and their pairings with food, with Jacky Luk from Forum receiving the distinction this year. The Service Award recognises the exceptional hospitality of restaurant staff that helps to complete the Michelin-starred dining experience, awarded to Kit Li from Sichuan Moon in Macau for 2023. Finally, the Young Chef Award celebrates young and rising talents in the culinary scene across Hong Kong and Macau, with Steve Lee of contemporary Korean establishment Hansik Goo scoring this monumental award in its inaugural edition.
