6 things to try if you have slow WiFi

By Localiiz Branded | 21 October 2021

WiFi woes are the bane of the digital age, and as everything gets moved online, we find ourselves at the mercy of the metal boxes we call routers. Routers provide wireless connection to the Internet using radio waves, receiving and sending signals from and to your devices, meaning that the faster these signals are transmitted, the faster your Internet connection is. But what happens when you are plagued by the dreaded lag or an eternal throbber (also known as the loading icon)? With so many Zoom calls and Teams meetings to attend, it is more important than ever to ensure you do not have network issues. Here are some things you can do to troubleshoot slow WiFi, according to the experts at networking hardware provider Netgear, and some other suggestions by the not-so-experts of Localiiz.

Restart your router

Sometimes, letting your router take a break really helps.

Do some squats

Work off the snacks you just ate.

Update your router’s firmware

Just like how you need to upgrade your phone’s software regularly!

Move your router

Some points to note:

  1. Do not put it inside a cupboard (concrete and wood can block WiFi signals).
  2. Do not put it near a microwave or large metal surfaces like your TV (metal can weaken the strength of your WiFi).
  3. Do not put it on the floor; try higher places, which can boost the WiFi signal.

Or, you can just upgrade your WiFi router

Sometimes, upgrading to the newest model really is the only way to get a better experience. The Netgear Orbi RBK852 (AX6000) Tri-Band Mesh WiFi 6 system offers larger coverage, as well as faster and more stable connection speeds for more devices, thanks to the use of WiFi 6, the latest development in the industry which boasts three times the speeds of the previous generation of WiFi. The router also has a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, ready to double your broadband speeds when it launches.

The Mesh WiFi system makes use of multiple satellite modules so there can be many sources of WiFi around the house, placed at strategic points around your home. The number of satellite modules can be tailored to your needs, creating a level of flexibility that is unaffected by your home design, even for homes with many rooms, wall blocks, and multiple levels.

Perfect for streaming your favourite shows, smooth gameplay, and Zoom lectures all at the same time. The system also supports smart home devices for a seamless digital experience. Plus, the routers look kind of like EVE from WALL-E—definitely sleeker than the clunky rectangles of previous generations.
