Free Ways to Get Fit in Hong Kong

By Amanda Sheppard 16 November 2018
Not a gym-goer? We can’t say we blame you. If the floor to ceiling mirrors aren’t enough to put you off, the prospect of queuing for a treadmill mid-week will likely do the trick. But if you’re looking to stay in shape, you don’t necessarily need to head indoors and take time out of your day to do this. These are the workouts you can give yourself on the go – some of them may even surprise you…

Walk it Off

When the weather isn’t tempting you out for a day on the hills, a lazy Sunday afternoon ordering in can be all the more tempting. You may not have known that the person on the other side of the door with your trusty bag of goods in tow has been working up quite the appetite themselves. Deliveroo walkers have been known to burn up to 450 calories per hour, thanks to Hong Kong’s hilly residential areas and hungry weekend warriors. In a working week covering peak delivery hours, they can cover over a staggering amount of territory – more than half a marathon in total!

Read it and Weep

Had a bad day? Sat sobbing at a film? Seen the latest John Lewis Christmas advert? Don’t hide in shame as you hold back the tears – they could actually be helping you in the long run. There isn’t much by way of a scientific backing for this, but some reports suggest you could burn up to 78 calories per hour – fully justifying you reaching for that extra biscuit in the tin.

The Commuter Crunch

Mornings on the MTR can be absolute mayhem, and when you’re found desperately reaching for the nearby pole with little to no success, chances are you could end up falling flat on your face. The next time the issue arises, engage your core and stand strong in the middle of the carriage – you’ll not only be able to stare smugly at the person next to you that’s tripped up, but you’ll also be well on your way to a six pac.

Sing, Shout, Dance About

Karaoke might not be an entirely free experience, but there’s nothing stopping you from staging your own indoor performance at home. If you fancy yourself as something of a budding pop-star, then rest up those vocal chords and prepare for a show. Singing can burn up to 100 calories in an hour – the equivalent of a large apple or banana. And if you can’t resist adding a dance routine to your favourite number, you’ll be burning even more.

Forget the Fidget Spinner

Last year’s most popular (and arguably irritating) trend saw toddlers and teens glued to their fidget spinners – three-lobed devices that spin around an axis. Annoying though they may have been, the tweens may have been on to something. Whether you’re tapping your fingers on the table, jiggling your leg or fiddling with a piece of jewellery, every little counts. Fidgeting can burn up to 300 calories per day.
