The Fame Game: 7 Ways To Become an Instagram Hit

By Sarah Moran 12 November 2018
It's a universal truth that every self-respecting millennial and their dog must have an Instagram account nowadays. Gone are the simple days when kids grew up wanting to be doctors, teachers, superheroes, or even YouTube stars, because they now have an even loftier goal to aspire to – being #igfamous. And who can blame them? Brands are spending a ton of money on Instagram influencers these days, all in simple exchange for these Insta-famous influencers to promote products on their platform. Want that easy life for yourself? Just follow our guide to social media stardom, and watch the followers, heart-eye emoji comments, and brand deals come flooding in.

1. Bio, Bio, Bio

First things first, we need to fix your Instagram bio. Your bio is the first thing people see when they land on your page, it's where they look to figure out who you are. It should include where you're based, (a glamourised version of) what you do, and your email, because if people want to know how to contact you, you must be important. Use emojis and bullet points, and maybe include a funny quip or two so you won't bore your audience.

2. Find Your Niche

Now that you've got your bio fixed up, it's time to give people a reason to follow you – your niche, or your so-called "aesthetic". While it's tempting to take the obvious cool kid route by simply posting cliché cafe pics, beauty product flat-lays, and #OOTDs, Instagram is the one place where it's actually better to not fit in. It can be anything from making HK-centric memes, recreating celebrity pics, or even Meryl Streep popping out of random food. Just make sure you stay true to your niche rather than try to be everything to everyone.

3. #Hashtags

It's time we get down to the business of #hashtags. If you didn't already know, Instagram lets you add up to thirty hashtags in one post, and as long as you can type it, it can be a hashtag – #But #You #Do #Not #Need #Them #All. Instead of choosing only the most popular hashtags, opt for less obvious ones that have a smaller, but steady growth of audience. Sorry to break it to you, but #cute and #travel will just make your post get lost in the millions of other #cute #travel #pics.

5. Do It For The 'Gram

"Do it for the 'gram" is a term used to describe doing things for the sole purpose of showing off on Instagram. This means everything from letting your food go cold for the photo, forcing your friends to take a million "candid" photos of you, using three different apps for one photo, and buying things just because "it'll look cute on Instagram."

6. Or Use Stock Photos

Alternatively, you could always just use free stock photos of people facing away from the camera, in random places around the world. No one will be the wiser. Of course, you should make sure the person in the stock photo actually bears some sort of resemblance to you.

6. Build Engagement

Your Instagram engagement is basically the number of likes, views, shares, swipe ups, comments, and more on your posts and stories. These stats matter to any Instagram famous person because it's what brands use to determine whether or not an Instagram influencer has the potential to convert their followers into customers. If you want to be Insta-famous, then you need to act like you care about these stats as well and start using "call-to-action" words on your posts such as "Tag a friend who....!", "Leave a comment below telling me...", or "Make sure you're following me on....!"

7. Or Just Buy Engagement

There is a massive business of buying and selling fake followers, likes, and comments on social media. Not only are these engagements cheap ($100-$200 for 200k to 500k followers), but they're also ridiculously easy to buy. Just Google "buy Instagram engagement," and you're inundated with options. Sites such as Like4Like and Buzzdayz even let you get Instagram likes for free!
