On World Oceans Day (8 June), OmniFoods announced the latest game-changing innovation in their quest to promote a sustainable ecosystem through diet change: the OmniSeafood product series

As its largest launch to date, OmniFoods will be presenting a range of vegan, plant-based seafood items, such as the Omni Classic Fillet, Omni Golden Fillet, and Omni Ocean Burger—in original, battered, or breaded fish burger varieties—along with OmniTuna and OmniSalmon (to be launched at a later date).

A Hong Kong pioneer in plant-based foods under multi-faceted social venture Green Monday, OmniFoods follows up on its expanding portfolio of alternative protein, hot on the heels of the worldwide success of its celebrated OmniPork series, which includes OmniPork Mince, OmniPork Strip, and OmniPork Luncheon.

In its mission to address the dangers of over-fishing and unsustainable seafood consumption, OmniFoods commissioned international research and data analytics group YouGov to conduct a survey across eight key markets, revealing that most people worldwide have deep concerns about the health of the oceans, fish extinction, seafood safety, plastic waste, and animal cruelty in the farm fishing industry.

One of the most effective ways to combat these concerns is to change eating habits, but the growing appetite and demand for fish and fish products have not lessened—in fact, both are at an all-time high, despite the drastic decline of global fish populations. We could be facing the extinction of seafood by 2048.

Fish is an essential protein source for over three billion people, and Asia is the biggest consumer of seafood in the world. In fact, Hong Kong has the highest consumption of seafood per capita. Because of this, OmniFoods was spurred to action to create not only safer fish products for consumption, but also to prevent the uncountable deaths in nets. Bottom trawling is not only destructive to the ocean ecosystem, destroying deep-sea coral forests in the process, but it also decimates the natural habitat of aquatic animals and indiscriminately catches non-target species, only for commercial fisheries to irresponsibly discard them.

Made from a proprietary blend of soybeans, peas, and rice, Omni Classic Fillet, Omni Golden Fillet, and Omni Ocean Burger are all aimed towards emulating the texture and taste profiles of white fishes. Omni Tuna will be the company’s first shelf-stable product, a mercury-free alternative to the most widely consumed fish in the world. Omni Salmon—still in the development pipeline—aims to replicate another well-loved fish.

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids derived from non-GMO expeller-pressed canola oil, the OmniSeafood series is also free from trans-fat and cholesterol, added hormones, artificial colours, MSGs, added antibiotics, and preservatives. On top of that, these fish alternatives are certified vegan and Buddhist-friendly!

If you would like to have a taste of this revolutionary innovation, you are in luck: the OmniSeafood series is available exclusively at Green Monday’s Kind Kitchen from 23 June onwards, to be rolled out with an ocean-themed menu. Start the meal off with the Omni Tuna tartare and follow up with tantalising mains of Omni Classic Fillet fried with crispy garlic & chilli, and Omni Golden Fillet in lemon sauce. An official announcement for the retail product will follow, but it is expected to be stocked towards the end of 2021.

For a showcase of how the Michelin-starred pros do it, OmniFoods is partnering with Cordis Hong Kong to serve up a selection of specially designed dishes across three hotel restaurants. Ming Court will present the Omni Classic Fillet sautéed with fresh peppercorn & bell pepper; Alibi will launch the Omni Tuna taco with spring onion and coriander salsa, avocado purée & shishito pepper; and The Garage Bar will introduce the Omni Classic Fillet fish & chips and the Omni Ocean Burger.
