If the popular adage is anything to go by, then you are what you eat. Following a popular and lasting trend the world over to eat healthier and attain a more sustainable lifestyle, as well as a growing pull towards supporting small local businesses, new homegrown brands have multiplied. To start the year off on a healthier foot, local fermented food brand Cultured has launched its first line of products, with a wide range of alternative snacks to try!

From the mind of Shirley Kwok, the founder of The Cakery, Cultured has launched seven exclusive fermented products bringing health, flavour, and sustainability to your kitchen cupboards. The idea for the brand came from the simple realisation that there is a lack of good vegan cheese alternatives in Hong Kong. Well, not anymore, if Cultured has anything to say about it! With sustainability in mind, fermentation was the way to go to create these unique “cheeze” spreads. As well as bringing out the ingredients’ beneficial nutrients and healthy bacteria, the fermenting techniques used by Cultured require very low levels of energy and allow you to keep items for much longer before they expire.

Packaged with brightly coloured labels, with a bold logo and an approachable design, these healthy snacks are far from bland, inside and out. Now available on sale are a range of fermented “cheeze” flavours, including the plant-based cream cheeze and truffle cream cheeze, as well as the jalapeño cheeze, smoked applewood cheddar cheeze, and sundried tomato and roasted garlic cheeze, which all use cashews as the base. Other than the “cheeze” spreads, Cultured also offers a sweet and spicy curry hummus and five-seeds crackers to go with the spreads. These everyday pantry items are easy to include in a sandwich, a salad, or a bagel for added flavour, or on their own as a snack.

The first line of Cultured products is now available here with delivery available to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, or for in-person pick-up at The Cakery locations.
