This groundbreaking technology has also enabled archeologists to unveil mysteries such as the diet, state of health, mummification process, and religious practices of the ancient Egyptians. Interesting, sugary treats and starchy foods were believed to be the downfall of one of the mummies, identified as an overweight twenty-year-old man with a serious sweet tooth.
Alongside their fascinating (and ever-so-slightly creepy) preserved remains are more than 200 invaluable historical objects from ancient Egypt, including some pretty spectacular jewellery (pictured below), protective amulets, and adorably simplistic children's toys. There is also plenty to keep the kids entertained in the form of interactive exhibits which use the latest technologies, such as 3D projection mapping, virtual reality, and holograms.
The exhibition is certainly becoming the talking point in the city, and judging by the heaving crowds barging their way through the doors on Saturday when we went, it will continue to draw the masses until the mummies depart Hong Kong in October to complete their global tour. History buffs will definitely want to check it out though, as Science Museum curator Chan Shuk-man hints that the mummies “might be ‘retired’ very soon after” the tour and won't be available for display for another 20 years.
So if you're looking for a culture fix or an educational day out with the kids, this is definitely a winner - it beats looking at Tom Cruise's smug face any day! Just save your toes from getting crushed and go on a week day.
The exhibition runs until October 18 and tickets cost $30 per person.
