Headline Of The Week: Drunk Man Buys Live Pig and Other Animals in Singles' Day Shopping Frenzy

By Sarah Moran 16 November 2018
Another day, another series of nauseating news. We get it, it’s difficult to keep up with all the information out there. Sometimes you watch the news and it feels like the world is spiralling out of control (kind of like a bad hangover) and you end up walking away from the TV with a banging headache. That’s why we’re launching our weekly fun news column, where we give you a breakdown of the strangest and craziest headline from the past week. You’re welcome!

If you thought your payday shopping splurges were a little crazy, then be prepared to meet your match. During Singles' Day, Asia's version of the Western world's Black Friday, an anonymous man went viral in China for buying live animals on several online shopping websites that were promoting their Single's Day sale. The story was first shared on Weibo by Pu Zhe Xu, who wrote, "I've found the most absurd champion of Singles' Day shopping! LeLe's friend got drunk on the day and woke up the next day, only to find out that he had bought a pig, a peacock, and a three-pound giant salamander hahahahahahaha." In the screenshots posted by Pu, the shopper wrote that he was browsing Taobao while drunk in the wee hours of the morning. "The whole time I thought I had only bought two sets of clothes," he wrote, "but when my clothes weren't dispatched, I checked again, only to find out that I had bought a pig and a peacock." And because buying animals on Taobao is so totally normal, he even went further and said, "That pig was bought at a 50% off discount so that's understandable, but I can't believe I bought the peacock without any discount! That really shows how much I had to drink." Upon further inspection (because not checking was what got him into this hot mess in the first place), he even found a giant salamander in his shopping basket – non-refundable, unfortunately. The bizarre story went viral on Chinese social media platforms, gaining over twenty thousand shares, nineteen thousand likes, and sixteen thousand comments. Netizens on Weibo were relentless with posting their own hilarious comments. One helpful user even posted a screenshot of how to cook salamander, while others commented that this guy must be extra lonely if he drunkenly bought three live animals on Singles' Day. Moral of the story? Do yourself a favour and don't shop while you're drunk!
