Hong Kong's Best BYOB Bars and Restaurants

By Localiiz 26 April 2018

Pining for payday when you can finally hit the town and enjoy some well-deserved drinks? Fear not, because our city is overflowing with generous venues that welcome the BYOB crowds through their doors without a charge — corkage is so last year! So gather your friends, grab a bottle or three, and hit one of these popular hot spots around town.

Restaurants

Aside from private kitchens, which more often than not welcome guests to come with drinks in tow, there are a whole host of restaurants which embrace the BYOB policy in Hong Kong. French restaurants are out in force when it comes to free corkage in Hong Kong, however there are venues serving food from across the globe which have kicked corkage to the curb. Cheers to that!

ABC Kitchen

A noisy canteen may not be the first setting that springs to mind when dreaming of a French dinner, however ABC Kitchen has pulled this unconventional venue off - somehow. Maybe it's the traditional red and white table cloths. Maybe it's the infectious hum of friends catching up and pans clanking in the kitchen. Maybe it's the fact that, before you know it, there are oysters floating around, corks popping, and tender meat dishes arriving for $160 to $240 a piece. Make sure you call ahead to make a reservation, because if ABC Kitchen was a secret before, it definitely isn't anymore. No corkage fee! ABC Kitchen, Shop 7, 1/F, Food Market, 38 Des Voeux Road West, Sheung Wan, (+852) 9278 8227

Bistro du Vin

For a taste of France without the stereotypical hefty price tag and free corkage on top of that (we've really struck gold here guys), get down to Bistro du Vin (pictured above). As a rule of thumb, one bottle of wine is allowed per two people with unlimited corkage coming into play when the price per head hits $500. Follow the advice of our guest food blogger, lolleroll, and make sure you order the Cheesy Onion Soup, loaded with melty, delicious goodness. Click here to check out her full review - bon appétit! No corkage fee! Bistro du Vin, Shop 1D, 1 Davis Street, Kennedy Town, (+852) 2824 3010

Bonheur

Sheung Wan has developed a reputation as Hong Kong’s French quarter for good reason, and Bonheur is happy to play a part in cementing this. The restaurant offers classical French cuisine with international influence, drawing upon flavours from Japan and their European counterparts, among others. We recommend tucking into the set menu in a big group, as the restaurant’s atmosphere makes it well-suited to larger parties. Advanced booking is essential to avoid disappointment — and to make sure your bottles are chilled in time! No corkage fee! $100 deposit required on weekends Bonheur, 6/F, The Pemberton, 22-26 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, (+852) 2544 6333 club chow

Carlos Tapas

Carlos Tapas boasts an intimate atmosphere, a friendly host, and delicious Spanish food. Bring a bottle of wine, two to three friends, and Carlos will fill your table with mouth-watering Spanish dishes such as garlic chicken, paella, and patatas bravas - yum! When you've had your fill of rustic Spanish cuisine, soak up the dusky Lamma atmosphere with a glass of wine in hand, and see where the evening takes you - more often than not, salsa dancing in the street. Although this rather mysterious tapas joint has no website or Facebook page, it's an absolute gem and well worth tracking down. Don't forget to read our Island Series if you want to find out what else there is to see and do on Lamma. No corkage fee! Carlos Tapas, Yung Shue Wan Main Street, Lamma, (opposite Jing Jing Bar, 54 Yung Shue Main Street)

 Fa Zu Jie

In Hong Kong, everywhere you go you will find that fusion food is a big theme among restaurants, but none are quite as unique as Fa Zu Jie, a French and Shanghai influenced restaurant in an open kitchen setting. Their set menu changes monthly but the high-quality foods remain the same, and best of all there's no wine list, which means you can BYOB to your heart’s content! No corkage fee!  Fa Zu Jie, 1/F, 20A D’Aguilar Street, Central, (+852) 3487 1715

La Parole

Hong Kong's first restaurant to combine fine dining with charity work, La Parole donates all of their proceeds towards funding Benji’s Centre, a local charity organisation that specialises in providing professional speech therapy for children with communication problems. Although some of the prices on the menu might be a tad high up on your budget scale, it's for a good cause, so get those champagne corks popping! No corkage fee! La Parole, 3/F, The Pemberton, 22-26 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, (+852) 2436 4099

Le Blanc

Quelle surprise, it's another French restaurant. Le Blanc is the last one (we promise), but we simply couldn't forget about this established dining spot which has been serving up classic French dishes since 2002. Roast Tartlet? Yes please. Confit de Canard? Don't mind if we do. Crème Brûlée? As if you even have to ask! Clocking in at around $200 to $300 for a main course, it's a satisfying compromise that diners can sip on their own wine and champagne without charge. No corkage fee! Minimum charge of $290 per person plus 10% service charge Le Blanc, 6/F, 83 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai, (+852) 3428 5824 The Pierside

Sijie Sichuan

Spice up your evening with a hearty serving of Sichuan cuisine, courtesy of Sijie Sichuan. Bright colours, vibrant flavours, and warming sauces — it's no wonder we go mad for Asian food. With two branches in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai, both of which waive corkage on wine, there's double the chance you'll bag yourself a reservation to the delight of your taste buds. All that's asked is that you tuck into the tempting range of spicy appetisers and main courses, while popping open your bottle. Sijie Sichuan, 10/F, Bartlock Centre, 3 Yiu Wa Street, Causeway Bay, (+852) 2802 2250 1/F, Aubin House, 171 - 172 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, (+852) 2896 0070

Tung Po

Located inside North Point's most popular wet food market, Tung Po is not your typical restaurant. You might wonder if you arrived at the wrong address when going up the escalators, but once you reach the restaurant you will be transported to a whole new world. With music playing in the back and dishes so fragrant you can almost taste the air, you can sip on whisky or pair your wine with some deep-fried squid without a corkage fee. If you're ordering beer from them, ask one of the waiters to show you how to pop the cap Tung-Po-Style! No corkage fee! Tung Po, 2/F Java Road Municipal Services Building, 99 Java Road, North Point, (+852) 2880 5224

Woo Cow Hot Pot

It's no secret that Hong Kongers love their hot pot, so we're thanking our lucky stars that Woo Cow Hot Pot has combined our love of BYOB and DIY feasting. We all know the drill: select your broth, pile your plate high with meat, veggies, and noodles, and hot pot your way to happiness. Beef is the star of the show here, as indicated by the name, so grab your beverage and get stuck in! No corkage fee! Woo Cow Hot Pot, 36 Nam Kok Rd, Kowloon City, (+852) 2383 9863 1/F, China Insurance Building, 48 Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, (+852) 3997 3369
