6 Things You Should Consider Before Getting a Tattoo

By Contributed content 27 September 2017

It's a strange phenomenon that so many people dedicate more time and consideration to the purchase of commodities than to the selection of tattoos - the latter potentially being either a blemish or piece of artwork that they will carry for the rest of their lives. To ensure you get it right first time, consider my six top tips before taking the plunge.

1. Do Your Research

Spend some time finding an artist that you like, don't just go with the first guy at your local shop because most tattooists prefer working in their specific style and you will get the best result if you go to the artist who is comfortable with the type of tattoo you want.

2. Keep it Simple

Don't try and cram all of your ideas into one small tattoo. Over time tattoos slowly spread out and loose their sharpness so keeping it simple will ensure that it always looks good and you won't need touch-ups.

3. Be Willing to Compromise

Be willing to compromise with your idea. The artist does this every day and knows what will work best so for more elaborate work, make sure you have a good consultation beforehand where you hash out your ideas and get on the same page - otherwise you may be in for a surprise!

4. Be Well Rested and Full

For long tattoo sessions you will need to make sure that you are well prepared. Arrive well rested and with a full stomach. Take a small snack and a drink with you as well to keep your energy up and don't be shy to ask for a break if you need one.

5. Leave Your Attitude at the Door

Most artist types don't respond well to shitty attitudes and do you really want to make the person who is marking you for life angry? Think about it.

6. You Get What You Pay For

Good tattoos don't come cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. Don't try and hussle the artist for a better price, if you can't afford it, then save up or perhaps consider a smaller tattoo or a more simple design. Bring cash, as very few tattoo shops accept cards. Ready to get inked? Check out Star Crossed Tattoo's website and Facebook page.
