There aren’t many big nightclubs in the Maldives, although there are occasional DJ-hosted events, so if you’re looking to hit the club scene, the island paradise probably isn’t the best place in mind. It is, however, home to spectacular wildlife, indulgent spa hotels, and secluded beach getaways. What’s more, its splendid range of restaurants and bars mean that you can wine and dine in the blissful haven, too. Imagine yourself, fresh from a swim, sipping at a rejuvenating mojito whilst peering over the brisk ocean surroundings. Sounds about right? Here are some of the chicest bars in the Maldives to get your cocktail fix.

Overwater Bar at Gili Lankanfushi

The blissful Gili Lankanfushi offers direct access to the sun and sea from its magnificent location. There’s plenty to see and do here, from the forest cinema to the indulgent Meera spa. In the lagoon, the Overwater Bar stands on stilts amidst a dreamy landscape, where guests can drink and dine their way through the breathtaking sunset. Opt for a bottle of Champagne under the stars, or perhaps just snacks and cocktails over a chatter. On Sundays, the bar and restaurant offer an Indian Tandoor night, featuring sizzling meats and spicy specialities to perk up an appetite.

Fifteen Below at W Maldives

As its name suggests, Fifteen Below is W Maldives’ underwater bar and club, offering a chic dance space hosted by international DJs. The principle of the space is to ensure that noise is contained, so as to not disturb other guests and travellers, hence its underground theme. Enter the paisley-shaped corridor, and you’ll immediately notice that there are no boundary walls within the room. It's an ethereal feeling to be in the bar, and with its wide selection of booze, guests can test out the best drinks in a cool and unique venue.

Subsix at Niyama Private Islands

With twin islands Play and Chill, Niyama Private Islands is the ultimate luxury destination for curious travellers. Guests can frolic in the treetops at Play, which is frequented by adventurous honeymooners and stylish families, or, if you’re more of a chill-out kind of person, Chill is a peaceful respite with the relaxing Drift Spa, and secluded overwater villas. Head to Subsix, the hotel’s underwater bar, come night time—accessible by speedboat. Descend the show-stopping, three-tier staircase, where champagne breakfasts, subaquatic lunches, and gourmet dinners await. Guests can marvel at the exquisite marine life—swimming Moray eels and groupers making their appearances in their underwater cabaret. The nightlife lights up with its Underwater Glow Party, hosted from 9.00pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
