There’s something that's just so appealing about rooftop drinking. Maybe it’s the scenic views, or maybe it’s the open-air atmosphere—either way, it draws in crowds from near and far. In Melbourne, the rooftop bar scene is just as buzzing, with sunset spots and craft beer venues all over. We’ve rounded up the best rooftop bars in Melbourne to enjoy the most spectacular sunset cocktails.

Madame Brussels

A fancy update to your typical rooftop bar, Madame Brussels takes a quirky, kitschy approach to its decor, and is located in the heart of the city. The third-floor establishment has an Alice in Wonderland theme, with a touch of tennis club—think pink walls, green astroturf, and garden chairs. Enter the garden party, which includes both indoor and outdoor seating, onto the admirable rooftop terrace, for optimum views of the city. To drink? Order from the selection of cocktails and fruit punches to match the setting—or a glass of champagne if you’re celebrating.

Madame Brussels, 3/59 Bourke Street, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia | (+61) 3 9662 2775

The Rooftop at QT

Perched atop designer hotel QT, The Rooftop is a huge indoor-outdoor split bar, providing a sleek, elegant venue to drink and dine your way through the sunset. Enjoy uninterrupted views of the city skyline from the bar, which is popular during post-work hours, and on the weekends when the DJs make their debuts. Decked in comfortable, plush sofas, the Melbourne rooftop welcomes guests to indulge cocktails and bar snacks, including the Japanese Wagyu Sandwich and Pulled Pork Burger.

Johnny’s Green Room

Sprawled across two floors above King & Godfree on Carlton corner, Johnny’s Green Room is well known for its spectacular views of the city from its buzzing rooftop. Peer over to gaze at the CBD high-rises, Collingwood church spires, and Dandenong Ranges. Expect 360-degree views here—but don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for your crowd, as the rooftop welcomes up to 200 people at a time. The impressive drinks list boasts everything from Victorian wines on tap to a classic Negroni.

The Local Taphouse

Inspired by European taverns from the thirties, The Local Taphouse is a beer hub, welcoming those looking to try a range of flavours. Hidden away on the corner of Carlisle and Balaclava, the venue features a regularly-changing menu, from pilsner to imperial IPA. If you have any questions, be sure to ask the staff—they would be more than happy to help. Spanning over two floors, the interiors are deep and dark, similar to an old-school English pub or reading room, whilst the leather couches lend a soothing ambience. Upstairs, the rooftop courtyard is a great place to watch the sunset, whilst drinking a pint. Cheers!

The Emerson Rooftop

The Emerson may be known for its entertainment and dancing, but the rooftop makes for a calming respite from the crowds. Decorated in elegant furnishings, the venue is welcoming and comfortable, which is perfect for sunset watching. Grab a cocktail, and invite some friends over for a night at this South Yarra bar. Popular on weekends, the rooftop is also a vibrant nightclub later in the evening, and features regular live music and DJs, usually on the floor below. Go all out by indulging in the bottle service, paired with a few Australian-inspired bites.

Siglo Bar

Perched above Spring Street’s Melbourne Supper Club, Siglo is a sophisticated rooftop venue for fine diners (and drinkers). The stunning establishment greets you with a traditional white tablecloth lounging area, where waiters offer a selection of classic cocktails, the finest spirits, and if you want, a premium Cuban cigar. Peek over the rooftop ledge to admire the Parliament House views and Spring Street.
