Travel: The Hottest New Hotels in Asia

Whether you’re planning a Hong Kong staycation or an exciting trip around Southeast Asia, there are loads of brilliant new hotels opening up in the region that provide a dreamy escape for a well-deserved break. Just take a look at these amazing gems, plus a few to look forward to later this year.

Opened in 2017

Kerry Hotel (Hong Kong)

We're suckers for comfort and a stunning harbour view, and that's exactly what Kerry Hong Kong delivers right here in Hung Hom Bay. Making waves in the city since it opened in April 2017, this 16-storey beauty, designed by renowned interior designer Andre Fu and award-winning architect Rocco Design, is the first new build hotel to open on the Kowloon waterfront in over two decades. Offering trendy bars and restaurants, cutting-edge sports and wellness facilities, and a stunning outdoor landscaped garden overlooking the harbour, it's no surprise this five-star resort is a magnet for both tourists and locals looking to kick back in the 852. Staycation here we come!

The Murray (Hong Kong)

Housed in a former 1960s government building in the Central district, Foster + Partners have redesigned and rebuilt the entrance and interiors to create a beautifully modern hotel. Part of the Marco Polo and Niccolo Hotels group, The Murray features 336 rooms and suites and five restaurants and bars, including a rooftop location on the 25th floor.

Ritz Carlton Langkawi (Malaysia)

Malaysia’s first Ritz Carlton resort opened in September 2017. Housed on one of the 99 islands that make up the archipelago of Langkawi, this five-star resort offers 90 rooms and suites plus 29 villas complete with private pools. It also features an ‘over-water spa’, three swimming pools, a range of dining options, and activities for kids and adults.

Park Hyatt Bangkok (Thailand)

Occupying the top two-thirds of the Central Embassy building in the upmarket area of Phleon Chit in Bangkok, the Park Hyatt opened in May 2017. With a distinctive art focus to its interior, it houses installations by Japanese artist Hirotoshi Sawada, including a ‘Pagoda Mirage’ in the ballroom and a Naga water dragon between the pool and waterfall. Bulgari Hotel Beijing (China)

Bulgari Hotel’s first property in China is conveniently placed within the east section of the third ring road in Beijing, within close proximity to the main business district and the popular Sanlitun shopping, restaurant, and bar area. The hotel, which describes itself as an 'urban resort', features riverside gardens, 119 rooms and suites, a 25-metre pool, Bulgari spa, a restaurant, and a ballroom.

Capella Ubud (Bali)

This brand-new luxury tented resort is inspired by the early European settlers of the 1800s. Immersed in the rainforests and paddy fields of Central Bali, the resort features just 22 ‘tents’, each with private plunge pools and decks, four-poster beds, and dark wood furniture. There are also two restaurants on site, a library, and a spa. Now this is our type of glamping!

Rosewood Phuket (Thailand)

With a secluded beachfront spot in Emerald Bay, Rosewood Phuket is the latest addition to Thailand’s largest island. Opened in November 2017, the luxury resort offers 71 pool pavilions and villas, each with its own infinity-edged pool. It also has three restaurants, a water-side bar, a holistic wellness centre, function rooms, and can host destination weddings. Time to get popping the big question!

COMO Uma Canggu (Bali)

Having opened in February 2018, this luxury resort from COMO is situated on Bali’s south coast, Canggu’s popular surfing spot Echo Beach. It features its own luxury take on a surf shack, the COMO Beach Club restaurant, which boasts live music and DJ sets. There are 52 rooms and suites, as well as 55 one-and two-bedroom residences, and 12 three-bedroom penthouses, complete with rooftop pools. There’s also a juice bar and COMO Shambhala wellness retreat for those in need of a detox.

2018 Openings ...

Amanyangyun Shanghai (China)

This jaw-dropping resort is the fourth Aman property to open in China, and although it officially opened in January 2018, it's been accepting guests for a few months now. The resort is made up of former Ming and Qing dynasty houses and a camphor forest that have been relocated from an area of Jiangxi, where they were due to be destroyed. The buildings have been carefully restored and fitted out with wooden interiors in a typically clean and stylish Aman way. Located on the outskirts of Shanghai, it also features a private garden and swimming pool, six dining venues, and a spa.

The Morpheus (Macau)

This huge monolithic structure is the latest addition to the City of Dreams resort and is due to open later in 2018. Designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, the two towers are connected at the podium and roof levels. The Morpheus features 780 rooms, suites and villas, plus an infinity pool on the 40th floor, a range of food and beverage outlets, and high-speed panoramic lifts. Definitely worth the ferry ride over to Macau!

Sheraton Manila (Philippines)

Located across from Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the new Sheraton Manila Hotel is due to open in June 2018. The property will have 350 rooms and suites as well as two restaurants, a lobby lounge, fitness centre, pool, and spa. Part of the Resorts World Manila complex, it's close to a range of shopping and dining options and a short drive from the CBD.

Ayana Komodo Resort (Indonesia)

Scheduled to open in September 2018, the luxury property is situated on the island of Flores, famed for its tri-coloured volcanic lakes and proximity to Komodo National Park. Situated on Waecicu Beach, the 13-suite and 192-room property is just one hour’s flight from Bali. The resort has commissioned the world’s largest Phinisi ship, which will be available for guests to charter cruises around the Komodo Islands.
