The two friends have for years been nurturing the idea of creating an event that will bring Hong Kong’s Western and Eastern communities together to enjoy a variety of stalls from local and foreign vendors. Hong Kong Bazaar shoppers will be able to browse Indo-Western fashion and traditional designer clothing, high end fine jewellery, house hold goods, hand bags, leather goods and traditional sweets and savories.
Shoppers can also cross their fingers in hourly lucky draws and be kept on their toes by Hong Kong’s professional Bhangra dancers, Funjabi. Scrumptious snacks will be served to tantalise taste buds and a drink stall will keep shoppers hydrated throughout the day. Those stocking up for the festive season will also find fantastic Diwali, Christmas and New Year deals.
What separates this shopping experience from the rest is the spirit of charity. Every item purchased at the CHARITY stall will raise money for the Citizens' Forum Vidya Mandir, a school in Maqboolpura, Amritsar, built to educate children and provide handicraft work for widows who have lost their husbands to drug abuse.
Starting out with just 20 students in a small room in 1999, the school now offers free education to around 750 children whose lives have been shattered by the high proportion of drug and alcohol abuse in the area. Uniforms and books are sponsored by a city school, while the government mid-day food scheme assures the children at least one meal a day. The school also provides work for many of the unskilled and unsupported widows of the village.
“We first heard about the Citizens' Forum Vidya Mandir through a journalist friend who gave us an article to publish in our magazine,” explained Genie. “We feel this is an initiative that everyone in Hong Kong should support.”
