Local Film Star Teaches Hongkongers How to Behave on Public Transport

By Sarah Moran 6 March 2019
Spend some time on Hong Kong's public transport and you'll start to wonder what social-norm-eschewing crack of the earth some of your fellow commuters emerged from. Some don't seem to notice when an elderly person needs a seat, while others hog a free seat with their bag, and getting squashed by strangers on the train seems to be a rite of passage in our city. These types of behaviour are so irritatingly common that the Hong Kong Transportation Department invited four-time Hong Kong Film Awards winner, Deanie Ip, to star in a short video teaching passengers how to behave.

From the lady who considers her commute a fine time to do some full body stretching, to a man hogging the MTR pole to use as his personal body pillow, Ip uses her quick wit to politely, but firmly, remind these scorned passengers to be more considerate of others. While we can have a good laugh at the familiar archetypes presented in the video, if you recognise yourself in these characters, well, that's the first step on the road to recovery.

As someone who is nosy (or just curious) and loves the written word, there was never any other career that appealed to her as much as journalism. When she’s not busy on her mission to find the line between not enough coffee and too much coffee, you can find her exploring the city or getting stuck in a good book.
