Multicoloured Pride of HSBC Lions Show Support for Hong Kong Pride Movement

By Sophie Pettit 5 December 2016
Have you ever seen a multicoloured lion before? No, we haven't either. So when we spotted these two majestic creatures on our walk to work this morning, we couldn't resist hopping over the road to find out more.  Upon closer inspection, we learned that the iconic HSBC lions, fondly known as Stephen and Stitt, have been given a vibrant makeover in support of the Pride movement and LGBTQ community. Unveiled on Twitter via the hashtag #HSBCpride on November 30, two new lions, named Stephen 'the Pride lion' and Stitt 'the Unity lion', now sit at the entrance of the headquarters on 1 Queen's Road Central - mirroring the original bronze statues, which have guarded the Des Voeux Road entrance since the grand opening in October 1935. Stephen, 'the Pride lion', is the roaring statue on the left. With bold rainbow stripes, inspired by the Pride flag, this addition to HBSC's pride of lions represents the institution's support for the Pride movement.

To the right of the entrance, you'll see Stitt, 'the Unity lion'. The mesmerising circular design is inspired by the beauty of diversity and social unity, with bright colours demonstrating support for the LGBTQ community.

Designed by local artist Michael Lam, both lions are sitting on a bed of green grass, with yellow paws to align with traditional Feng Shui principles.

"HSBC is proud to support diversity and inclusion," said Group General Manager and Chief Executive Diana Cesar, "and is deeply committed to supporting equality for everyone. Stephen and Stitt are powerful symbols of Hong Kong and I am sure that the bold new interpretations of these replicas will strike a chord with all who pass by."

The new additions to the HSBC pride are on show until December 30, so make sure to check them out - and don't forget to rub their paws for good luck!
