How To Make the Most of Your Annual Leave Allowance in 2019

By Amanda Sheppard 10 December 2018
Hong Kong might be notorious for leaving its employees with annual leave in short supply, but thankfully, an abundance of public holidays helps us plan our fair share of holidays throughout the year. When these fall on long weekends and bank holidays, you can end up spending a week away with just a day or two off, but this requires forward planning – you won’t be the only one looking to get away, so booking in advance will save you the disappointment or fully-booked flights and budget-blowing accommodation. So mark your calendar with these dates to make the most of your time off in 2019.

February

Chinese New Year falls mid-week this year, so if you book off the Monday and Friday on either end of the holiday, you can enjoy an entire week off with two weekends added on, for good measure. Public holidays: February 5, 6, 7 Days to book off: February 4, 8 Total days off: 9

April

With Good Friday and Easter Monday falling on April 19 and 22, Hongkongers have a long weekend built in, but if you’re willing to add on a few days extra, you could be in for a lengthy 10-day holiday. Public holidays: April 19, 22 Days to book off: April 23, 24, 25, 26 Total days off: 10

May

This year, Buddha’s birthday falls on a Monday, so booking the Friday or Tuesday off will give you ample time to book a long weekend away. There’s also the potential to find some great deals, as this isn’t a holiday celebrated widely around the region. Public holidays: May 13 Days to book off: May 10, 14 Total days off: 4/5

June

If you’re not among the fighting fit, then Dragon Boat race day isn’t a holiday you’ll be desperate to stay in Hong Kong for. Opt instead for a short trip to somewhere in Asia – a wealth of tropical beaches and city breaks lie only a few hours away. Public holidays: June 7 Days to book off: June 6/10 Total days off: 4/5

July

HKSAR Establishment Day falls on Monday, July 1. Booking off the Friday or Tuesday on either end (or both, depending on how much leave you have to spare), will leave you with the perfect amount of time for a summer beach break. Public holidays: July 1 Days to book off: June 28, July 2 Total days off: 4/5

October

National Day falls on Tuesday October 1 in 2019, and a few days later, the Cheung Yeung Festival gives Hongkongers another day off on Monday, October 7. Taking off the days in between allows for a solid week-long holiday. Public holidays: October 1, 7 Days to book off: October 2, 3, 4 Total days off: 7

December

If you’ve budgeted your leave well, then you’ll have plenty of time off at the end of the year to fill with festive fun. Christmas and Boxing Day fall on a Wednesday and Thursday, so if your office is staying open, and you want to enjoy a full week off, you’ll need to file for leave on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday of the same week. Public holidays: December 25, 26 Days to book off: December 23, 24, 27 Total days off: 9
