7 unusual meals you didn’t know you could get delivered in Hong Kong

By Ching Yuen 20 April 2020

For our fellow citizens stuck at home and kept away from the streets (a.k.a. Hong Kong’s food paradise), never fear! Food delivery is becoming an ever bigger, ever valuable part of our lives in Hong Kong, and even though you stan pizza for life, it’s admittedly boring to eat the same things over and over again. Here’s a list of awesome and unusual meals you didn’t know you could get delivered in Hong Kong—enjoy this in the comforts of your home!

BBQ on a stone slab

Missing KBBQ with the homies? Barbecue has traditionally always been an outdoor activity or a social gathering cue to huddle around a restaurant grill, but with social distancing rules in place, we’ve had to improvise and we’ve found a solution to satisfy our meat cravings at home!

Pig Act Cow is a butcher shop in Tsz Wan Shan that also offers delivery options, with a takeaway set ($548) that comes with a stone slab for you to heat up at home and grill the meat on. The complete set includes with a portable stove, three fuel candles each lasting 30 minutes, and a premium wagyu meat platter. As the slab is made usually natural volcanic rock, it is perfectly food-safe and beyond easy to clean. The sound of sizzling meat is music to our ears, so we are all up for trying this one remotely while we put our friends on a Zoom call. Order through their website or on WhatsApp via (+852) 5246 4183.

Multi-soup-based hot pot

Packaged in a picnic basket-inspired box, you would never guess that an entire hot pot meal can be delivered straight to your doorstep. Chic and popular chain The Drunken Pot has two themed hot pot sets available for takeaway, offering combos suitable for four people up to 12 (starting from $1,352). Each set comes with four signature soups, Sichuan spice, Chaozhou satay, condensed pork broth, and truffle broth, and high-quality seafood and meat, of course. It even includes a box of condiments to make sure you can finetune the flavour you desire the most. Delivery charges vary depending on where you live, and you can rent their pots for a deposit of $150. Looks like hot pot is just a neverending bowl of surprise and happiness! Order via their website.

Steam pot meal

If you haven’t heard about them before, tiered steam pots are a recent craze making waves in the local dining scene, so obviously, it wasn’t long before Sinfresh Hotpot Delivery came along and offered the option of a steam pot takeaway! With a three-tiered steam pot system, delivery comes with a range of seafood and meats to be stacked on top of each other and steamed. After you have finished steaming all the ingredients, the essence of your cooked seafood and vegetable gathers at the bottom of the pot, which you can then mix in the congee stock and slurp up!

You can choose sizable and adjustable portions ranging from two people up to 12 people (starting from $309 per person) with an additional à la carte menu for you to load up on your favourites. Delivery orders are accepted on WhatsApp via (+852) 6063 2624 and you will receive directions for how to steam each ingredient and the duration it requires.

Live seafood in a water bag

Some families may be used to going to wet markets every day to get fresh seafood for dinner, but since it’s better for everyone to stay home at the moment, why not have your fresh seafood delivered to you? The FreshGo mobile app lets you pick your seafood anywhere, anytime! While the service has been running for half a year now and offers fresh seafood from the Aberdeen wet market online, it is more relevant now than ever.

Once you download the app, you can see a live stream of all the seafood to make sure they are fresh (and alive). From fish to shellfish and crustaceans, you can click into your preferred item to check the weight and price. If you’re happy with your choice, the staff will put the fish in a strong plastic vacuum bag filled with water and oxygen and deliver it straight to to your doorstep within three hours! Download the FreshGo mobile app to place your order.

Fireless hotpot

Hot pots are great wherever, whenever, but only if you have a can of gas to start the fire. To solve this problem, Boat Boat Steam has launched a Hotpot Delivery ($138) package that has no open flame and instead uses the power of science. There is a special heat pouch on the bottom layer that activates itself in water to produce heat. Simply pour water into the bottom layer of the pot and then place the second pot layer with soup over it to be heated. You can add in your seafood toppings such as clams, razor clams, scallops, shrimp, and abalones at your leisure and mix in the congee near the end to create a hearty soup that is condensed with the sweetness of seafood. Place your order via Deliveroo here.

Spicy pickled fish hot pot

A Chinese delicacy where a whole fish is cooked in a spicy pickled vegetable stew, this dish is now available for takeaway in Hong Kong. The Chongqing Whole Fish with Clams Pot ($598) is Taste Hotpot Delivery’s interpretation of the traditional dish, with a whole fish, prawns, and clams in it, enough to feed five people. It comes with a stainless steel platter to heat up the dish, and you can even add on Angus beef slices as well as other vegetables. Orders can be placed through WhatsApp via (+852) 9251 7455.

Class ice cream fondue set

Ice cream fondue

What used to be a seasonal promotion at Häagen-Dazs is now a takeaway option—can you guess what it is? Yes, we’re talking about ice cream fondue! You can now dig into this pot of goodness in the comfort of your own home. The Classic Ice Cream Fondue Set ($499) comes with 32 mini ice cream scoops and two chocolate sauces. You can also choose an additional voucher when ordering online, such as an $80 cash coupon or a single scoop voucher. Orders can be placed online via their e-shop.
