Currently located in both Yau Ma Tei and Causeway Bay, HaiDiLao is Hong Kong’s latest hot pot craze. Well known for its fresh ingredients, top-quality services, and fun environment, this quirky eatery has quickly earned a spot on the 'must-try' list for foodies across the city. From live noodle-making performances by expert chefs, to relaxing manicure treatments given during your meal, here is everything you need to know about Hong Kong's hottest new joint, HaiDiLao.

The Reception

Not only does the restaurant have a range of snacks and drinks available for hungry diners who are waiting for a table, there are also plenty of fun mini games that can help distract your kids from their grumbling stomachs too. Just try not to get too carried away, since you still have a delicious hot pot waiting for you inside. Tip: If you want to eat at the restaurant during peak hours, consider making a reservation ahead of time to avoid the long wait.

The Food

[caption id="attachment_130287" align="aligncenter" width="660"]haidilao-image-source-openrice-alison33 Image source: openrice / Alison33[/caption] Once you are finally seated, you can begin ordering by adding items to your cart on the iPad menu (available in both English and Cantonese). With over 80 items to choose from, diners can opt for either a full or half portion for each ingredient, as well as one to four different soup bases. We highly recommend ordering half portions to start off with, so you have plenty of stomach room to try more items on the menu! If you’re spoilt for choice and don’t know where to start, just ask one of the servers for assistance and they will be more than happy to let you in on the best soup combos, freshest ingredients of the day, and must-try items on the menu. All servers here have at least one month’s worth of training beforehand to ensure that guests receive top-quality service. They’re even trained to help you cook your food, put on your aprons, and peel the shells off your shrimps – could we be any more high maintenance? [caption id="attachment_130282" align="aligncenter" width="660"]noodle-making-haidilao-image-source-orange-dog-tw Image source: orange-dog[/caption] Tip: Be sure to order a portion of ramen, as the noodle chef will come and put on a noodle-making show right in front of you.

The Fun!

[caption id="attachment_130285" align="aligncenter" width="660"]bian-lian-performance-image-source-ireneslife-1 Image source: ireneslife[/caption] Apart from table-side noodle-making, the restaurant also puts on regular Bian Lian performances every day at 1pm, 6.30pm to 7pm, and 8.30pm to 9pm. In case you're wondering, this is an ancient Chinese dramatic art where performers, wearing brightly-coloured costumes, dance and change masks almost instantaneously to traditional Chinese music. Amazing! [caption id="attachment_130292" align="aligncenter" width="660"]haidilao-manicure-image-source-openrice-小秘書食記 Image source: openrice / 小秘書食記[/caption] As if that’s not enough, diners can also receive free manicures during their meal (yep, you read that right). Simply put your name and phone number down, and you will be notified when it’s your turn to get pampered. The whole process takes roughly 20 minutes, but if you’re worried about leaving your kids at the table for that long, you can take them to the kids' play area where they can play games, draw, and watch cartoons, with a professional carer onsite to look after them. Tip: There is also a function on the iPad that will allow you to monitor the kids' play area, so you can always keep an eye on your little ones.

The Extras

[caption id="attachment_130291" align="aligncenter" width="660"]haidilao-image-source-openrice-ringow Image source: openrice / ringow[/caption] We love those little extra touches, and HaiDiLao certainly delivers. Here you will find random goodies such as a free instant photo printer, USB outlets at each table, sealable plastic pockets to protect your phone, hair ties, and blankets available for all guests. And before you leave, don't forget to take advantage of the large variety of toiletries available to use in the bathroom. We’re talking mouthwash, moisturising sprays, individually packaged toothbrushes, face wash, hair gel, cotton buds – the list goes on. Can't wait to try it out? Then make a reservation now at either one of the two outlets below, and prepare to feast! Born in Hong Kong and raised in the UK, Jenny grew up with the best of both worlds. She loves just about anything to do with music and doesn’t shy away from belting out a tune or two when it comes to karaoke. If she’s not out and about exploring the city and practising her photography skills, she’s probably tucked up in bed with a book or glued to her laptop doing her online shopping.
