12 brand-new anime releases in 2020 to watch out for

We talked about what animes to get started on as a beginner, so now we are focusing back on present-day animes and new releases to look forward to! There is going to be a lot of new series, season continuations, as well as anime films for seasoned anime lovers and beginners alike. We picked our favourites out of the many releases and hopefully will get y’all interested!

Boku no Hero Academia (Season 4)

In a world where people are born with “quirks” (superpowers), a Hero is now a popular career choice for many. The protagonist is someone born without a quirk but manages to inherit the quirk of a legendary Superhero, thus successfully enrolling in the prestigious hero training school. In the fourth season, the students of Class 1-A goes for their first work experience which consists of being mentored by a real licensed Hero. The heroes and students discover an underground villain group looking to create quirk damaging drugs, so it’s up to them to stop the operation and save the child whose blood they’re using to manufacture the drugs. Darwin’s Game

Our protagonist is your average high school student who one day, receives an invitation from a classmate to play Darwin’s Game, a mobile game he has never heard of. Out of curiosity, he opens the application when suddenly a green snake pops out from his phone screen and bites his neck, rendering him unconscious. When he wakes up, there are no traces of the snake bite and school is somehow cancelled. Confused by what was happening, he uses the application once again. The application looks like just any other normal mobile battle game so he starts his first match for fun. As expected, Darwin’s Game is not just any ordinary game as his game opponent suddenly materialises next to him and hunts him down with a knife in a desperate fight for survival. Available now

My Dad’s Secret Ambition (Kakushigoto)

This new comedy series revolves around a manga artist who is raising his daughter by himself. Since his work is described as “somewhat vulgar manga,” he is determined to hide his job for the sake of his daughter. This father-daughter tale is bound to be filled with love and laughter as their day-to-day life goes on. Available now

Arte

Setting itself in Florence during the sixteenth century, this anime revolves around the renaissance period and the world of art. The protagonist is a girl born into an aristocratic family who wishes to become an artist, an unlikely occupation for someone from a noble family who is also female. In order to pursue her dreams, she throws away her aristocratic lifestyle and becomes the apprentice of a renowned portrait master. Available now

Gleipnir

Welcome to the world of monsters, and yes, they do live among us. Our high school protagonist wakes up one day to find that he has turned into a monster with brute strength, big fluffy paws, and a severe case of depression. He tries to find his secret as a monster and cling onto his humanity but of course, life doesn’t go as planned. His secret was exposed to a girl on a mission to find her sister who has also turned into a monster and their twisted adventure of battling other monsters begins. Despite being human, the girl has a twisted and sadistic nature that forms a sharp contrast to our monster protagonist who is trying desperately to hold onto his human ideals. Available now

Fruits Basket (Season 2)

Time for some fluffiness and romance: The second season of Fruits Basket is here. Our female protagonist has been living under her foster family’s roof for over a year now, and for anyone who has forgotten, the people of that household are cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when they are hugged by members of the opposite sex. With everyone enrolled in the same school, they continue to deepening their friendship as they deal with the hardships of having the curse and are determined to help find a way to break their curse. Available now

Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0

Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 is the long-awaited fourth instalment of the Rebuild of Evangelion reboot film series, first teased in 2012 that will also serve as the finale of the series. Though the films are widely known as a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, they’ve grown steadily different from the source material with each film instalment and a different ending is promised to close the series. Mecha fans and robot-lovers, you are in for the treat of the decade! Available June 2020

Fire Force (Season 2)

In an alternative work, Japan is plagued by a phenomenon known as Spontaneous Human Combustion where human beings suddenly turn into living infernos and burn up everything around them. The protagonist joins the Special Fire Force, established to fight against these “infernals,” and uses his ability to manipulate flames at his feet to help extinguish internals and to discover the truth behind the mysterious fire that killed his family. Available July 2020

Haikyuu!!: To the Top (Part 2)

A sports anime all about volleyball, Haikyuu!!: To the Top sees our protagonist’s volleyball team who has finally made it all the way to Japan’s nationals. After polishing their skills at the training camp, the team is ready to make history and our main protagonist, who is only 162.8 centimetres tall and constantly undermined as a short player, is all fired up to conquer the skies and take flight in the world that we thought belonged only tall giants. Available July 2020

Great Pretender

The protagonist in Great Pretender is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler (keyword: supposedly). Together with his partner, they try to trick a Frenchman in Japan but unexpectedly gets all their money stolen instead. They chase the man all the way to Los Angelos and learns that the French con man is actually a big deal in the underworld with ties to the mafia. So either they both get killed for messing with the wrong people or we get to see how they roll their way out of this mess! Available July 2020

The Promised Neverland (Season 2)

This dark anime series is about a post-apocalyptic world where orphans growing up one day realise that they are actually fodder raised and farmed to feed monsters. After discovering the truth of their existence, they make plans to break out of the farm. The second season follows the group of orphans who finally see the outside world for the first time, but the escape isn’t over yet as hunters are on their trail. Available October 2020

Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen

A direct continuation of the story from the 2019 breakout series Demon Slayer, a world based in the Edo period where flesh-eating demons run wild. The protagonist trains as a demon slayer as he tries to find a way to turn his demon sister back into a human. In the film, him and his pals board the Mugen Train in pursuit of master Demon Slayer to assist him on his mission investigating the matter of passengers mysteriously disappearing on the train. Available 16 October 2020

Having lived in Hong Kong, Beijing, and London sure is a fun fact whenever people try to guess Ching’s accent. She loves switching between all these language channels and her “mother tongue” is just determined by how many drinks she’s had for the night!
